Q***r Ontario Stands in Solidarity with Capital Pride

As Pride season winds down amid ongoing efforts to silence those calling for an end to the genocide in Palestine, Q***r Ontario stands in solidarity with Capital Pride.

Following the release of a Statement in Solidarity with Palestine on August 6, 2024, numerous organizations and individuals – including Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, the Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Liberal Party of Canada, Public Service Pride Network, the Bank of Canada, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, Giant Tiger, Loblaws, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board – have publicly withdrawn their participation in Capital Pride, citing concerns ranging from a lack of community safety to the desire to avoid the perception that participating may call into question their commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

By misconstruing the substance of Capital Pride’s concern for rising levels of antisemitism, islamophobia, the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, and an uptick in hatred toward 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across the country, these withdrawals are a cowardly bow to Zionist pressure in the face of global injustice. Moreover, they contribute to the pinkwashed perception that Pride is reducible to highly commodified parades and parties made possible by professional institutions, politicians, and corporate sponsors. In short, the selective deployment of these tropes and the conditional support they offer 2SLGBTQIA+ people are as insulting and ill-informed as they are tired. Experiencing discomfort is not the same as being unsafe.

In resolute opposition to this backlash and those perpetuating it, Q***r Ontario applauds Capital Pride for outlining a principled stance and taking reasonable actions to express solidarity with the Palestinian people. Similarly, and in contrast to the approach of Pride Toronto to these issues, we are grateful to Capital Pride for having the courage to act in the spirit of Pride by reminding people across Ontario that Pride is rooted in protest.

Standing against oppression and injustice is the backbone of q***r resistance. With this in mind, Q***r Ontario calls on 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and their allies across the province to join us in standing with Capital Pride!

On Tory's increase in funding to the Toronto Police Service (TPS):

More police to raid encampments and force unhoused people onto the street is not a solution to Toronto’s housing and affordability crisis. If the city of Toronto has nearly 50 million dollars to spend on these issues, it should be spent on community supports, including working with people experiencing housing precarity to find solutions rather than policing them into the margins.

Policing agencies across North America have often used an apparent increase in crime to call for further increases to police budgets. Current trends in local crime statistics do not translate to an overall increase in crime, which has been on a steady decline since 1992. Favouring policing as a response to social issues has and continues to have direct implications for healthcare, housing, and other sectors in crisis due to chronic underfunding.

Only cops benefit from more cops. Q***r Ontario supports the abolition of all police and prisons and seeks the development of a society that treats all members equitably and without fear.

World AIDS day and the beginning of Indigenous AIDS awareness week, a time of reflection and for honouring all lives impacted and lost to AIDS.

From its onset to today, the global AIDS epidemic has shaped q***r politics. In the face of government inaction beginning in the 1980s, 2SLGBTQ+ activists and community organizations played a central role in establishing some of the first HIV/AIDS community groups in Canada, many of which grew into essential AIDS Service Organizations that continue the life-saving work of HIV/AIDS support, education, and prevention.

Q***r Ontario celebrates the lives of all those we have lost, the steadfast persistence of HIV/AIDS activists who have fought, and continue to fight, through support, education, and prevention, against the ongoing discrimination and stigma aimed at people who are living with and affected by HIV/AIDS, and the courage of those living with HIV today.

Undetectable = Untransmittable.

Silence = Death.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance, for which we have annually memorialized those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. At Q***r Ontario we want to remind everyone that this act of remembrance must happen everyday, in our work, our involvement in the communities we serve, and in our personal lives. We remember all the Trans, Inters*x, Two-Spirit and NB people, that have been lost to all of us. We also must remember those that are still with us and the daily struggles of Trans, Inters*x, Two-Spirit and NB people that should always be reflected in our work and our lives.
