College of Nurses of Ontario

College of Nurses of Ontario As the governing body for Ontario's 180,000+ nurses, we register nurses, help them maintain competence, and set and enforce practice standards.

We partner with employers, educators and government so that all Ontarians benefit from safe nursing care. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting safe nursing practice. CNO fulfils its role by:
*establishing require

ments for entry to practice
*articulating and promoting practice standards
*administering its Quality Assurance Program
*enforcing standards of practice and conduct

CNO also supports the regulation of nursing in the public interest by:
*participating in the legislative process
*sharing statistical information about Ontario’s nurses

CNO works in partnership with employers, educators and government so that everyone in Ontario benefits from quality nursing services. CNO aims to prevent harm by identifying potential sources and addressing them before they can negatively impact the public. We are committed to a whole-system approach to nursing regulation and working with you to make a greater collective impact on the patient care system. Community Guidelines

CNO welcomes respectful engagement. Comments containing hate, spam, or personal matters will be removed. Read our full guidelines here: https://collegeofnurses.org/m/guidelines

On July 1, the way NPs will be registered in Ontario is changing. To make NP regulation more streamlined across Canada, NPs will be registered under a single NP classification. If you’re an NP, there’s nothing you need to do. This change will happen automatically on July 1, and NPs can and will continue to deliver specialized care and work with current patients and within current scopes of practice.

Removing the need for a population-specific certificate allows you, if needed, to work more flexibly, potentially increasing patient access to qualified health care providers

We’re here to support you through this change. For more information, check out our:
➡️ New Quality Assurance resources for NPs
➡️ FAQs about how this change will impact NPs
➡️ Recent webinar, which includes a live Q&A with CNO staff
➡️ Information page all about the shift to a single classification of NP

Meet Edith Monture, the first Indigenous nurse registered in Canada.

Monture was born on April 10, 1890, on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She graduated from New Rochelle Nursing School in New York in 1914 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War I.

After the war, she returned to the Six Nations Reserve and worked as a nurse and midwife until her retirement.

Like Monture, Indigenous nurses today continue to provide culturally safe care by bridging Western and Indigenous knowledge and practices.

🌈 Happy Pride Month! Every June, we celebrate the diversity, resilience and history of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our support for 2SLGBTQ+ rights and inclusive health care.

Every day across Ontario, nurses support safer, more inclusive care by providing care that is compassionate, nonjudgmental and culturally safe — values that are reflected in CNO’s Code of Conduct.

To everyone celebrating this month, we wish you a happy Pride Month!
