Women living with HIV in Canada are not living as long—or as well—as men living with HIV. We don’t fully understand why, and that’s exactly the problem.

Dr. Hélène Côté is the Chair of CANFAR's Scientific Advisory Committee. Drawing from years of clinical and epidemiological research, her message is clear: without a decisive shift toward women-centered HIV research and care, we risk widening an already dangerous gap.

HIV is often perceived as a managed, even stabilized condition—but this perception masks a critical and growing reality: women are an increasingly affected population, and the systems designed to understand, prevent, and treat HIV are not keeping pace.

So proud to share that CANFAR's first-ever documentary short, STILL HERE, funded by Merck, has been selected for The Canadian Independent Film Festival - CIFF in Montreal next weekend! STILL HERE: A portrait of HIV & Aging, explores what living and aging with HIV looks like today through the lenses of 4-time Juno Award winner Billy Newton-Davis, drag and recording artist Jade Elektra, and Indigenous policy manager and advocate Trevor Stratton.

This is a humbling achievement for our first-ever foray into long-form storytelling, and we're so excited more people will get to see this intimate, raw and unfiltered look at what it really means to age well while living with HIV.

Congratulations to this year's CAHR-CANFAR Excellence in Research Awards Winners!

CANFAR's CEO Dr. Paul Sandstrom was honoured to co-present the CAHR-CANFAR 2026 Excellence in Research Awards at the Canadian Association For HIV Research Conference Opening Ceremonies on April 23rd, 2026. These awards are bestowed annually to mid-career researchers who have achieved a track record of excellence and have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of those living with HIV or who are more likely to contract HIV.

CANFAR is proud to support the launch of Rapid TLC (Testing and Linkage to Care)—a new initiative led by REACH Nexus at St. Michael’s Hospital’s MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. This national program will bring rapid HIV and STBBI TLC directly into underserved communities across Canada. Last Thursday, CANFAR's CEO Paul Sandstrom and Board Chair Andy Pringle attended the launch alongside Lori-Ann Green-Walker, Executive Director of Women's Health in Women's Hands CHC a CANFAR-funded community partner implementing this initiative, with support from LCBO Spirit of Sustainability.

Using the GeneXpert rapid, mobile testing system, Rapid TLC delivers lab-quality results in under 90 minutes, helping to reduce barriers to TLC caused by distance, stigma, and delays in care—especially for communities overrepresented in HIV and STBBI cases.

This is what research in action looks like. Together, with the support of our partners, we’re expanding access to culturally safe, community-based care; closing gaps in health equity; and moving one step closer to ending the HIV epidemic in Canada.
