Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing free travel and accommodations for Canadians in financial need who must access medical care far from home. Since its inception in 1986, Hope Air has provided approximately 150,000 travel arrangements for patients regardless of age or medical need. For people living on a low income in small and rural communities, distance and cost are very real barriers to them accessing vital medical care. Hope Air is a unique and essential part of our Canadian healthcare system. Without the access Hope Air provides, our national system of universal healthcare coverage would fall short of its promise. Hope Air has been chosen as one of Canada’s best 100 charities by Maclean’s magazine, MoneySense magazine and Charity Intelligence based on efficiency, transparency and need.

At just seven years old, Ainsley is a dancer, singer and big personality who loves making people smile.

Living in Sudbury, Ainsley travels approximately 400 kilometres to Toronto for specialized care at SickKids Hospital, the only hospital in Ontario equipped to treat her complex intestinal conditions.

For her mom, Melissa, making that journey by car can be stressful and exhausting, especially with Ainsley’s medical needs. Through Hope Air, they can travel between Sudbury and Toronto with greater ease, making the trips for essential care more manageable.

With several medical appointments each year, Hope Air helps ease the burden of travel so Melissa can focus on what matters most: Ainsley’s health, happiness and the activities she loves.

As we wrap up another season of Hope Air’s Volunteer Pilot Program, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteer pilots for a successful 2026 season!

Your generosity, dedication, and willingness to give your time and share your aircraft has directly helped patients who have no or limited access to commercial airline service travel to the medical care they need.

While the main flying season winds down, some of our volunteer pilots with winter-capable aircraft will continue flying throughout the winter months, helping patients reach essential medical appointments when travel can be even more challenging.

To every pilot who flew with us this year, supported a mission, or helped make the program possible: thank you for being part of the Hope Air community and for helping Canadians access the care they need, wherever they call home.

Our Haul for Hope fundraisers came together to make a difference for patients who need to travel to access medical care. From every dollar raised to every pull, our participants helped ensure distance and cost are not barriers to care.

As part of our WestJet voucher fundraising contest, every $500 raised earned participants one entry into the draw, with one winner selected at each site. Congratulations to our winners!

When Nancy moved from Quebec to Hearst, Ontario, she never expected that accessing the neurological care she needed would become so difficult. Living with multiple sclerosis, Nancy needed to reconnect with a neurologist nearly 900 kilometres away in Ottawa. Without a way to make the journey, continuing her specialized care felt out of reach.

That changed when her family doctor introduced her to Hope Air. Nancy was able to travel to Ottawa for care through Hope Air’s Volunteer Pilot Program (VPP), which connects patients who need to travel for medical appointments with volunteer pilots who donate their time and aircraft to help them get there.

Today, Nancy travels for in-person appointments about once a year and connects with her specialist virtually between visits, helping her stay connected to the care she needs.

This summer, Ontario business and community leaders rallied behind Hope Air through Haul for Hope in Toronto and the Give Hope Wings flying expedition, raising over $500,000 to help patients travel for essential medical care.

From pulling a Porter Q400 aircraft to flying thousands of kilometres to raise awareness, supporters demonstrated what’s possible when a community comes together for a shared cause.

For patients and families who must travel far from home for specialized treatment, Hope Air helps ease the financial burden of travel, so they can focus on their health.

At 78, Kenneth’s greatest joy is spending time with his wife, enjoying his grandchildren and making memories with the family he’s built.

Living in Hixon, BC, Kenneth is managing prostate cancer that has spread to his lymphatic system, requiring specialized treatment in Kelowna. With ongoing back problems, difficulty walking and medication-related fatigue, travelling approximately 680 kilometres for care is physically demanding. The cost of travel presented another significant barrier.

Through Hope Air, Kenneth was able to fly to Kelowna, with his wife by his side to provide essential assistance throughout the journey.

Without Hope Air, the cost of travel would have prevented Kenneth from accessing the care he needed. Instead, the support helped ease the financial and physical challenges of getting to treatment, allowing him to focus on his health and time with his family.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that access to medical care means more than getting to an appointment. It’s also about the comfort of home and the support of family.

When Rhonda was diagnosed with leukemia, she faced months of intensive treatment in Vancouver, away from her husband and children. With support from Hope Air, she could fly between Penticton and Vancouver for treatment, giving her the opportunity to return home and spend precious time with her family.

According to Hope Air’s 2026 Patient Survey, 79% of respondents frequently felt stressed or overwhelmed about their health before receiving support.

For Rhonda, being home meant finding comfort in the everyday moments that mattered most. This World Mental Health Day, we recognize the importance of supporting patients’ emotional well-being throughout their medical journey.
