We often get asked where our office is and we like to joke that all of Willowdale is our office. And it’s pretty true. Our work spreads out over multiple food hubs, church halls, parks and even Mel Lastman Square. However we are fortunate that Wellspring Worship Centre offers us a space in their basement to store all of our things and meet as a team once a week.

On Wednesday ours flooded due to the storm, like many other basement spaces. The church will need to undergo some major renovations and repairs. Last night after a long day of programming NeighbourLink team members and some kind volunteers moved all of our items upstairs into an alcove in the church that will have to act as our office for the time being. Upon first looks it appears not much was damaged in the storm but we’ll continue to assess. Fingers crossed we can bounce back and return to our space soon.

We’re thinking of all our neighbours who experienced damage to their homes, vehicles and property this week.

We wrapped up our Summer Youth Mobilization program than with an Appreciation Day!🎉

Our youth volunteers came together to celebrate their hard work and dedication throughout the summer! From icebreaker questions that got everyone talking to fun games that brought out everyone’s competitive side, it was a perfect way for our youth to connect and recognize the impact they’ve made in our community. 💙✨

Almost 100 youth volunteered, 720 hours and there's still a few park clean ups and a tech help and tea scheduled for this week!

Thanks to our amazing youth volunteers for bringing energy and kindness all summer long. 🙌🏻

And of course, a HUGE thank you to the organizations who helped make our celebration extra special by donating prizes to give away to the youth!🎁✨ Prize donors included:
- Aga Khan Museum
- Northern Karate Schools
- The Village at Black Creek
- Farm Boy (Midtown location)
- True North Climbing
- Bird Kingdom
- Kawartha Dairy

We are so grateful for your support and for helping us celebrate! 💙🧡

Summer may be coming to an end, but the memories and impact will last beyond it. ✨

Last Thursday, neighbours came together for our Summer Newcomer Welcome Tea. Newcomers from around the world and of all ages were able to connect with welcoming neighbours and enjoy a meal together.

We welcomed TCCSA , CLEAResult , Willowdale Community Legal Services and Get Well Health Team to share about their programs and resources.

This event is all about creating a safe landing space for newcomers where they can have a good time, access important resources and leave knowing more people in their community than they did before.

We’re grateful to Spring Garden Church for providing the space and for all the volunteers who helped make the event come together! Stay tuned for our next welcome tea in October!

🪏🌱 On Thursday, August 27, our Youth Mobilization volunteers spent another afternoon harvesting vegetables at the St. George on Yonge Anglican Church Community Garden!

Together, volunteers helped harvest fresh beets, beans, lettuce, peppers, swiss chard, zucchini, and more while learning about gardening and enjoying time outdoors with the community. 🫜🥬🌶️

The best part? A portion of the fresh produce harvested from the garden will help support local families through NeighbourLink’s food banks. 💙🧡

A huge thank you to our partners at St. George on Yonge Anglican Church Community Garden and to all of the amazing youth volunteers who came out to help! It was such a great afternoon of teamwork, community connection, and giving back.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer at this community garden, please contact St George on Yonge Church directly by emailing them at [email protected]

Over two dozen campers at our summer camp at 415 Willowdale have been having a fun couple of weeks with Jordan and our Summer Child & Youth Workers. ☀️

🏅🏆 Week 3 was an Olympic themed week! Throughout this week, kids enjoyed competing in friendly competitions similar to real Olympic games. These events built up to a special Friday where kids were split into teams and participated in our very own Olympic games! They did javelin throw, long jump, ran hurdles, did a relay race, and sprints!

🐟🌴 Week 4 was all about animals. Throughout the week, we made clay animals, created our own volcanoes, and played animal style games. We ended off the week with a field trip to Ripley's Aquarium! The kids got to look at and learn about aquatic animals they have never seen, and even got to touch some of them. The trip was a safe, fun success.

Our team and the campers can only look forward to more fun in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates!

Congratulations to Anna for being our Volunteer of the Month! 💙🧡

Anna started volunteering with us in March and quickly became an essential part of the team! We quickly learned that Anna is a friendly, creative, proactive, and considerate volunteer and neighbour. Anna regularly volunteers at our seniors programming and food hubs and was also a great help at our Taste of North York community and food festival. Anna will soon be leading a creative workshop for our seniors programming. Stay tuned for details!

Anna shared some words about her volunteer experience with us: "I'm truly honored to be nominated as Volunteer of the Month. When I retired, I decided to spend this new chapter giving back to the community that has shaped my life — connecting with seniors, helping neighbors, welcoming new immigrants through the foodbank and community activities. One of my favorite parts has been sitting down with seniors to work through technology troubles or chat while playing board games, watching isolation turn into laughter and connection. I still smile thinking about the day I taught a senior to play dominos alongside some youth volunteers, and afterward she told me, "Thank you for playing with me, I am very happy"—that moment is exactly why I do this. Serving with Neighbourlink has brought me more joy and fulfillment than I ever expected, and I'm grateful for every connection along the way."

If you're interested in volunteering at the NeighbourLink Food Hub or in our other volunteer opportunities, please visit www.neighbourlink.org/volunteer to learn more about our volunteer opportunities and to apply as a volunteer.

If you have any further questions, you're welcome to email the volunteer manager, Lily Su, at [email protected]
