Simcoe County is proposing a new change to our garbage pickup. The proposal is that garbage (black bin) will not be picked up unless the compost (Green bin) is put with it. Simcoe County has done some audits of garbage and it has shown that 46% of garbage contains “green bin” materials in it.

I know many seasonal residents may experience some issues. I know there are many that do not use the green bin for their own reasons. The fact is, our landfills are nearing end of life capacity (by end of 2027). For anyone who was around when we were fighting Site 41 (for those that haven’t heard of it, you can look it up), we have two choices: truck it to Michigan (for as long as that is allowed - think tariffs) or have new dump sites created….yes, they may be in our own backyard.

The opportunity for all Simcoe residents may be to increase their diversion of “green” materials properly. Going after the 25% who don’t use it may be a lost cause unfortunately. I encourage folks to use the Simcoe County Collection app to see all the Green materials that can be used. I was surprised by all the additions.

I don’t believe in penalizing people by not picking up their garbage if their green bin is not out. I believe in education about the benefits of using the green bin. There was a great presentation done last week at County Council regarding the science behind it.

I’ve questioned and brought up the fact that empty green bins will just be placed at curbside and likely will live there, maybe causing an insightly look to properties. There is no impact to taxes to pickup a used or empty green bin. Sometimes we need to take bold steps in order to help our environment but I’d like to know, for or against this proposal.

Please leave a comment, either For or Against the proposal. Thanks!!

Latest update. This is a dynamic and ever evolving situation. Please carefully review the attached. If you are without power, please note the extended hours of our warming centres.

Stay safe as it’s getting nasty with the freezing rain. We will get through this together. Check on any of your vulnerable neighbours.

Significant Weather Event Update – April 2, 2025
The Township of Tiny remains in a Significant Weather Event declaration as per Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act.

The Township of Tiny Municipal Emergency Control Group continues to monitor the ongoing evolving post-ice storm situation.

The township continues to be in contact with our partner agencies to receive updates about power restoration.

Hydro One
• Power restoration may take several days due the scale of damage. For updates, follow Hydro One, or visit their outage map: https://d8bkcndcv6jca.cloudfront.net/
• For safety, Hydro One urges everyone to stay at least 10 metres away from fallen power lines and report them immediately to 92887 (WATTS) or Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.
Update as of 12:00 p.m. (noon) today (April 2, 2025), the township received the following information from Hydro One:
• This is the worst storm Ontario has seen since 1998, and the damage is unlike anything we’ve experienced in years.
• Our crews, alongside contractors and team members from 18 other Ontario utilities, are working non-stop to restore power to the 208,000 customers who are still without electricity.
• Since the storm began late Friday night, we’ve restored power to more than 783,000 customers.
• The past two days of good weather have helped with restoration, but today, we are preparing for freezing rain and wind in central and southern Ontario. Wind speeds may not be considered severe, but they may cause damaged trees to fall and break which could slow our efforts and cause additional outages.
• Road access continues to be a challenge in the most impacted areas, along with safety concerns of tree branches and limbs coming down.
• It’s likely that as crews continue cleanup, they will uncover more damage and additional power outages.
As this significant event continues, be a good neighbour and check on those around you.

• Residents are advised to stay away from downed power lines, or those with trees on them.
• Burning is by a valid 2025 permit only. For more information about burning in Tiny, visit www.tiny.ca/firepermit.

County of Simcoe Waste Management
• County of Simcoe waste collections will continue as usual where possible. Leaf and yard waste trucks will only be accepting bundled brush, not bagged leaf and yard waste, from April 14th to 25th to help with cleanup efforts. For information on waste collections: https://simcoe.ca/residents/organics-recycling-and-garbage/collections-impacts/.

Significant Weather Event
On March 28, 2025, the Township of Tiny declared a Significant Weather Event due to forecasted freezing rain and rainfall amounts that posed a significant danger to roadway users and potential flooding.
During a Significant Weather Event, all roadways and sidewalks are considered to be in a “state of repair” and may be unsafe to use.
This declaration is permitted under the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways under Ontario Regulation 239/02.
Notice will be provided when the Declaration of Significant Weather Event has been removed based on the township’s ability to achieve the requirements under MMS.
