The iconic crow, one of the unofficial mascots of spooky season! We know them, and we either love them or get spooked by their presence due to their longstanding history in folklore and superstitions. Despite all of that, crows are very intelligent songbirds. 🎶

In Ontario, we have three species within the Corvidae (crow) family: the American Crow, the Common Raven and the Fish Crow. The American Crow is known for the distinct "caw, caw" sound while ravens make more of a deep, croaking sound. Fish Crows have only recently started breeding in Ontario, so they have a smaller population and are rare to see.

The Bald Eagle is 1 of 2 eagle species that can be found in Ontario. It's population nearly vanished from Southwestern Ontario and the species was considered endangered. As of 2023, they are no longer a Species at Risk due to conservation efforts.

You can spot eagles along the shores of Lake Erie and around large bodies of water. They need a mature forested area to nest and the bodies of water provide hunting grounds to supply their diet of fish, birds and other small mammals. 🦅

Eastern Red-backed Salamanders are quite active this time of year, as well as the Spring, due to the cool, damp conditions... their favourite! You can typically find them under or in rotting logs and/or stumps.

These cute little salamanders are small but pack a mighty punch...literally. These lungless amphibians don't play around when it comes to protecting their territory within deciduous and mixed forests, they will result to physical combat if necessary, especially if they are defending their nest.

They even have cannibalistic tendencies if food becomes sparse or territories are being crossed by stranger salamanders. Adults will eat unprotected eggs or juvenile salamanders if necessary. 🦎

As part of the Vittoria Dam Decommissioning Project, our staff are conducting baseline monitoring of the current conditions of the watercourse before work begins. On this day, staff completed fish biomass surveys to estimate the total mass of different fish species within the watercourse. 🐟

We’ll continue to collect data and monitor conditions as the project advances, helping us guide our approach along the way.

Following the completion of the Vittoria Dam Class Environmental Assessment, the LPRCA is making progress towards the implementation of the preferred alternative to decommission the dam.

Reservoir drawdown has not started, and no stoplogs have been removed yet. The next steps are to finalize the detailed engineering design, continue baseline monitoring, and complete required regulatory approvals!
