Today, on the 25th anniversary of this tragedy, we remember the people who died during the events and those who suffered in its aftermath. OPP ASSISTING DEATH INVESTIGATION IN NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION
One Person in Custody
(NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION, ON) - One person is deceased and another seriously injured following an incident in North Spirit Lake First Nation.
On Friday, September 4, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m. CDT, officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to an incident in North Spirit Lake First Nation. Upon arrival, officers located one individual deceased and a second individual with serious injuries, who was transported to a trauma centre.
One person is in custody and the investigation is ongoing. At this time, investigators believe this was an isolated incident and there is no immediate risk to public safety.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit and NAPS Crime Unit are continuing the investigation, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance is being provided by NAPS Emergency Response Team, NAPS Forensic Identification Services, OPP Emergency Response Team, OPP Canine Unit, OPP Regional Support Team, OPP Forensic Identification Services, OPP Kenora Crime Unit, and the NAPS Police Liaison Team.
The OPP would like to thank the Chief and Council of North Spirit Lake First Nation as well as members of the public for their support as this investigation continues.

INCIDENT LEADS TO INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE

(North Spirit Lake First Nation, ON) – Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service’s North Spirit Lake detachment responded to a call for service regarding a disturbance within the community shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

As a result of this disturbance, the public may observe an increased police presence in the community as the investigation continues.

There is no known ongoing threat to public safety as a result of this incident.

An adult male suspect is now in custody, but further details are unavailable at this time. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Summer technically continues until September 22, but we know the Labour Day long weekend is summer’s spiritual end. To celebrate the better times we had, we’d like to take a moment to look back at the tug-of-war featuring our NAPS officers taking on their OPP counterparts during the opening ceremonies of the 44th Blueberry Festival in Sioux Lookout.

We hope you all have the ability to look back on this summer fondly, even if there were challenging times throughout. We’re also wishing you all the best as we move into autumn.

TWO ARRESTED, CO***NE AND OXY SEIZED, IN GERALDTON SEARCHES

(Geraldton, ON) – Police arrested and charged two suspects Monday connected to investigations involving drug trafficking activity in Geraldton.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Intelligence Unit, with the assistance from members of the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau, Greenstone Community Street Crimes Unit and Anishinabek Police Service Major Crimes Unit, executed search warrants at two residential addresses in Geraldton on Monday, Aug. 31. Searches were conducted at homes in the 200-block of Holm Avenue and 200-block of 4th Avenue.

A search of the two homes led to the seizure of a quantity of suspected Oxycodone pills, co***ne, cash, and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking. Police located and arrested a female suspect without incident.

Lisa MENDOWAGON, 56, of Aroland First Nation, is charged with:

• Trafficking a Controlled Substance (Co***ne) x2
• Trafficking a Controlled Substance (Oxycodone) x4
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

She appeared for a bail hearing on Monday, Aug. 31, and was remanded into custody with a future court date.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Intelligence Unit, with the assistance from members of the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau, Greenstone Community Street Crimes Unit and Anishinabek Police Service Major Crimes Unit, also executed a search warrant at a residential address in the 700-block of 1st Street on Monday, Aug. 31.

A male suspect was arrested at the scene without incident.

Following a search of the home, police located and seized a quantity of co***ne, cash, and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

A 70-year-old male from Geraldton, Ont., is charged with:

• Possession of Co***ne for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

He has since been released from custody with conditions and a future court date.

The names of accused individuals are withheld until charges against them have been sworn before the courts.

The investigation remains ongoing.
