Should the Mayor vote on Council Matters?
I have worked for and with many wonderful Mayors. Some of them vote on every item before them (as long as they have not declared a pecuniary interest) and some of them only vote when there is a tie. Sometimes this is their personal decision and other times it is how it has always been done in their municipality.
It is my opinion that, if elected Mayor, I would vote on every matter along with the other members of Council. I want the residents to know where I stand on the items that come before Council. I have thoughts, values, opinions and beliefs that I will bring with me to the position of Mayor and many of these will become evident during my campaign. I won’t know everything and will rely on the well-researched information presented to Council by staff, the feedback from residents and my own research into matters that I am less familiar with.
What are your thoughts on this? Should the Mayor vote on Council matters?
