Due to inappropriate items being put in several organics bins of residential properties, the organics truck's hydraulic packer got jammed up and had to return to Edmonton and offload, before spending several hours clearing out the packer.

Attached is an image of all the properties that the organics pickup was able to collect, and all other residential properties were missed as a result. The organics truck will return first thing this morning (Wednesday, May 27th) to complete the collection so please leave your organics bins at their collection point.

Also attached is the guideline of what can go into an organics bin that has been made available on our social media in the past. In the future, please remain cautious what you put in your bin. Thank you!

On May 20, 2026, Council for the Town of Thorsby approved the 2026 municipal budget and Property Tax By-law 2026-08 with a 0% increase to the municipal mill rate.

While the municipal mill rate will remain unchanged, residents may still notice an increase in the municipal portion of their property taxes. The average household is expected to see approximately a 5% increase in municipal taxes, due exclusively to increased property assessments. Property assessments are determined independently and are outside of the Town’s control.

Property assessment notices were mailed to residents in late February and property owners had the opportunity to review and appeal their assessments up until the May 5, 2026 appeal deadline.

Residents will also see increases related to provincially mandated costs which include the Provincial Education Property Tax requisition and RCMP policing costs.

The overall average property tax increase for households is expected to be approximately 5.73% or $194 per year.

Council recognizes the ongoing financial pressures facing residents and businesses and remains committed to responsible financial management while continuing to maintain essential municipal services, infrastructure, and community programs.

The Town of Thorsby Budget includes a $6 million tax-supported operating budget to maintain current service levels and a $3.77 million capital budget to support the towns infrastructure, facilities and long-term assets.

“Council and Administration worked diligently to balance the needs of the community while limiting the impact on taxpayers,” said Mayor Darryl Hostyn for the Town of Thorsby. “Although the Town has maintained a 0% mill rate increase, external factors such as property assessments and provincially mandated requisitions continue to affect overall taxation.”

Residents with questions regarding their property taxes are encouraged to contact the Town Office for additional information.

Keep an eye out in the mail for your 2026 tax notices, which were put in the post on May 21st, 2026. If you do not receive your notice in a timely manner, please feel free to come into the Town Office, with proof of identification, to receive a copy of your tax notice.

If you are waiting for land titles to process, please contact the Town Office as you may not receive your tax notice before June 30th.

If you are not a registered land title holder of a property, subject to the Access to Information Act (‘ATIA’), the Town will be unable to provide information regarding tax notices. These are not the same as tax assessments, which is publicly available information and can be found on the Town website.

Please note taxes are due on June 30th of every year.

If you are looking for a way to spread out payments over time with no penalties, signing up for the Tax Installment Plan (‘TIPS’) can be done at any time in-person at the Town Office during regular business hours. Feel free to call the office for more information on how the Tax Installment Plan (‘TIPS’) can help you with taxes every year.

If you make your tax payments online, please remember to give 2-3 business days for the payment to reach us. If we receive it after June 30th, it will be considered late and subject to penalties. The Town does not take tax payments via credit card. Thank you very much!
