🎣♻️ Help Keep Our Waterways Clean!

The Town of Thessalon is pleased to announce the installation of a Fishing Line Recycling Depot at the Thessalon Marina in partnership with the Central Algoma Land Trust and Lake Huron North.

Discarded fishing line can pose a serious threat to fish, birds, and other wildlife when left in our waterways and along shorelines. By using the recycling depot, anglers can help protect our local environment and keep the marina and waterfront clean for everyone to enjoy.

The next time you're out fishing, please remember to dispose of your unwanted fishing line in the recycling depot rather than in the garbage or the water.

A big thank you to our partners for helping make this initiative possible and for their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship in our area.

June marks the beginning of turtle nesting season, and you may start seeing turtles laying their eggs in sandy and gravel areas. Help protect these important nests by using a turtle nest cover.

We have turtle nest covers available to be borrowed from the Little Rapids General Store and from our conservation centre in Desbarats for community members who discover nesting turtles and want to help keep eggs safe from predators and disturbances.

If you spot a nesting turtle, please give plenty of space and contact us to learn more about protecting the nest. Together, we can help give the next generation of turtles a better chance to hatch safely!

Lake Huron North will be installing a rain garden at Peace Park beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 22nd.

If you are interested in helping out and learning more about rain gardens, we would be happy to have you join us at the park!

🌿 Thank you to those who attended the Invasive Plant Presentation last Thursday. Tina was very informative and knowledgeable in this topic. Participants learned that many of these invasive plants are still being sold at green houses, and it is surprising which beautiful plants are actually invasive!

Daniel, from Lake Huron North was in attendance and was very knowledgeable and provided additional information to contribute to discussions.

Attached are the slides from the presentation for anyone interested in learning more about invasive species and their impact on our community and natural spaces.

🌿 What’s Growing in Thessalon… Isn’t Always Welcome! 🌿

Did you know some of the plants you see around Thessalon are actually invasive species? These plants may look harmless—or even beautiful—but they spread aggressively, crowd out native plants, and disrupt our local ecosystems.

🚫 Some Common Invasive Plants in Our Area Include:
* Purple Loosestrife – A pretty purple plant that takes over wetlands and pushes out native species.
* Creeping Bellflower – A persistent garden escapee that spreads rapidly through roots and seeds, making it very hard to control.
* Periwinkle – Often used as groundcover, but it can spread into natural areas and outcompete native plants.
* Japanese Knotweed – Extremely aggressive, can damage foundations and is very difficult to remove.

🌱 Why It Matters
Invasive plants reduce biodiversity, impact wildlife habitats, and can even affect our shorelines and water quality.

🧤 What You Can Do
✔ Learn to identify invasive species
✔ Remove them safely - DO NOT compost, or bring to the landfill
✔ Plant native species instead
✔ Report large infestations

𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝? 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞!
As you tidy up your yard and garden this spring, keep in mind that proper disposal of yard waste is important. Many invasive plants can regrow from small fragments or seeds, meaning improper disposal can spread them further.

Some tips:
✔️ Bag and dispose of invasive plant material
✔️ Avoid composting invasive plants
✔️ Clean soil, seeds, and plant debris from tools, boots, and equipment
✔️ Avoid dumping yard waste in natural areas
✔️ Check local guidelines for proper disposal options in your community
