A big THANK YOU to a couple of thoughtful local residents who dropped off some amazing snacks for our members during training last night!

Gestures like this mean a lot to our crews and are greatly appreciated. Our firefighters spend many evenings away from their families training to better serve the community, and support from residents like you helps keep spirits high.

We’re proud to serve such an incredible and supportive community here in Sylvan Lake. Thank you for thinking of us!

🔥 Today we recognize true everyday heroes. 🚒

On International Firefighters Day, we take a moment to honour the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of firefighters here at home and around the world.

These are the people who step forward when others step back. Ready to protect lives, property, and communities at a moment’s notice.

❤️ Today is about gratitude.
👏 Today is about recognition.
🚒 Today is about them.

To every firefighter, career, volunteer, and support staff. Thank you for everything you do, seen and unseen.

🔥 Backyard Fire Pit Reminder – Know What You Can Burn 🔥

As we head into nicer weather here in Sylvan Lake, we’re seeing more backyard fire pits being used and that’s great! Just a quick reminder of what’s allowed under the Town’s Fire Protection Bylaw to help keep everyone safe.

✅ What’s Allowed:

Clean, dry, untreated wood
Charcoal

🚫 What’s NOT Allowed (and is a bylaw contravention):

Leaves, grass, or yard waste
Painted, stained, or treated wood
Garbage or household waste of any kind

🔥 Fire Pit Safety Basics:

Only burn clean, dry wood or charcoal, nothing else.
Keep smoke and sparks to a minimum so it doesn’t impact your neighbours
Always have a responsible adult supervising the fire
Fully extinguish the fire before leaving it unattended

Burning the wrong materials doesn’t just break the bylaw, it creates excessive smoke, harmful toxins, and unnecessary risk for your neighbours and our community.

Let’s all do our part to keep Town of Sylvan Lake safe and enjoyable for everyone.

🚨 Changing your smoke detector battery? Don’t skip this step! 🔋

Before you grab the ladder, take a quick moment to think about your alarm system, especially if it’s monitored.

📞 A quick call to TELUS (or your provider) can save you a lot of hassle. They recommend:
👉 Disarming your system
👉 Putting it in test mode

Why? Because changing a battery can trigger a false alarm… and that could mean an unexpected visit from your local fire department 🚒

We love connecting with our community, but we’d rather it be on your terms!

🚨 I🚨 Quick Safety Tip You Should Know 🚨

Calling 911 from your cell phone? Here’s something important: your exact location doesn’t always show up right away for emergency dispatchers like it can with a landline.

That means you are the most important source of information when every second counts.

📍 Know where you are
🗣️ Clearly tell the dispatcher your location
⏱️ Help responders get to you faster

It’s a simple step that can make a big difference in an emergency.

🚪💤 You Snooze with an Open Door, You Lose! 🚨

Before you doze off tonight, make sure to close your bedroom door. In the event of a fire, a closed door can help slow the spread of smoke and flames, giving you more time to escape safely. It’s a simple step that could save your life!

Close the door before you doze, and stay safe!

🚫📱🔥 Don’t Charge Your Phone in Bed 🔥📱🚫

Your bed isn’t a charging station. Phones charging under pillows, blankets, or on mattresses can overheat, and that heat can start a fire while you sleep.

✅ Charge on a hard surface
❌ Never on beds, couches, or under pillows
😴 Unplug before you turn in

A small habit change can prevent a big emergency. Help keep your home and your family safe tonight.
