Banned Book Club is back tonight at Party Chef!

Join us at 6:30 p.m. to discuss The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Banned Book Club exists to bring awareness and education to banned and challenged books, encouraging open and civil discussion about these books that are controversial. Participants can agree or disagree with the content of the book - the only requirement to join the discussion is that they have read the book for themselves!

Our target audience is 16+, and like all of our adult programs, we encourage parents to engage with their kids that are interested and attend this book club with them.

One of the questions often asked about our book clubs is "Who selects the books?". As with any new library book club, staff select the first few reads, and then participants are encouraged to make suggestions or vote on the titles they would like to discuss in future meetings.

At our last two meetings of Banned Book Club, participants had the chance to vote on a variety of titles, some put forth by library staff, and some put forth by participants and community members. After two rounds of voting, our upcoming titles will be:

πŸ“š Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume
πŸ“š The Grace Year by Kim Liggett
πŸ“š Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
πŸ“š The Giver by Lois Lowry
πŸ“š All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson
πŸ“š The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
πŸ“š Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
πŸ“š Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
πŸ“š Sold by Patricia McCormick

While the rest of the books put forth did not make it on our schedule yet, they may still be read in future book clubs, and serve as great community recommendations for those wanting to expand their reading.

Want to help select the books for Banned Book Club? Join us for the discussion!

We were honoured to take part in The Big Squeeze, an annual event to encourage youth entrepreneurship.

The amazing young kiddo who set up his lemonade stand at the Library donated his earnings to the Library, because "he loves books"!

Thank you to this amazing kiddo, and congratulations to all the youth who participated in this year's Big Squeeze. We can't wait for next year!
