🚨 This bill-198 clause 93 should be very alarming to every land owner in Nova Scotia.
The Crown owns:
• Metallic Minerals: Gold, silver, copper, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, rare earth elements, uranium, platinum group metals.
• Energy Resources: Coal, petroleum, oil shale, natural gas.
• Industrial Minerals: Potash, fluorspar, gypsum (sometimes), limestone (sometimes).
• Other: Subsurface salt, ammonite shell.

The proposed Copper Mine is located upstream of MacDonald and Gillis Lake, which feeds Gillis Lake Falls and discharges into the Bras d’Or Lakes as well as Blacketts Lake.
Is it really with the risk??

The proposed copper mine is upstream of MacDonald Lake, Gillis Lake, Blacketts Lake, and Gillis Lake Falls, discharge water from the falls ends up in the Bras d’Or Lakes.
Is it really worth the risk??

HOW CAN WE TRUST THE PROCESS?
The Mining Association says “Mining today is not your grandfathers mine, and they have very strict environmental guidelines”.

The lack of data means it can be difficult to assess how a mine is impacting the surrounding community, researchers say.

The attached article outlines how close the proponent of the proposed Copper Mine came to being able to potentially purchase land it was already leasing from CBRM for a mere $140,000, the assessed value as of these said lands as of August 2023.

Staff’s advice to council to sell 1K acres to a mining company was dropped from last night’s agenda. But we’re still going to talk about it.

The early rumblings of the proposed Copper Mine came about when lands already being leased by an exploration company named Nova Copper were added as an agenda item to a council meeting to be deemed as surplus lands. Fortunately, it wasn’t put through at that time. If it had been, Nova Copper could have potentially purchased the lands for the then assessed value of $140,000.
