Free storm clean up kits are available to CBRM residents who have flooding clean-up from the weekends flooding.

The clean-up kits include basic cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment. Supplies are limited.

Attention residents who have flooding clean up:

The Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the Nova Scotia Guard, is offering free storm clean-up kits to CBRM residents to assist with your recovery following this week’s flooding.

The clean-up kits include basic cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment. Supplies are limited.

Volunteers will be handing out clean-up kits are available by visiting the Canadian Red Cross office on 1140 Upper Prince Street in Sydney

Monday September 7th, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm

From Environment Canada: Very heavy rain is expected. Total rainfall: 100 to 150 mm. Time span: Friday evening until Monday morning.

Remarks: A slow-moving weather system is bringing periods of significant rainfall. Tropical moisture may contribute to sustained, heavy downpours. Rainfall rates of 10 to 20 mm per hour may occur over some locations. Thunderstorms may develop, producing locally heavier rainfall.

Travel delays and/or cancellations are possible. Don't drive through flooded roadways.

Due to high winds and heavy rain, residents may choose to hold onto their materials until their area's next regularly scheduled collection day. There may be impassable roads due to the inclement weather.

Extra garbage bags and green cart material will be collected in your area's next regularly scheduled garbage and green cart day.

Blue bags will be collected in your area's next regularly scheduled blue bag collection week.

Please ensure materials are secure. At the end of the collection day, if materials are not collected, they must be removed from the curb.

Come out and witness a proud Cape Breton tradition!

On Saturday, August 29, the Cape Breton Highlanders Association will exercise the Freedom of the City of the CBRM with a parade through downtown Sydney.

The Regiment will step off at approximately 10:45 a.m. from the corner of Pitt and George Streets, marching along Pitt Street, Charlotte Street, Falmouth Street and the Esplanade to City Hall. A ceremony will take place at City Hall before the Regiment marches back to the Victoria Park Armouries.

The Freedom of the City is one of the highest civic honours a municipality can bestow upon a military unit. It gives the Cape Breton Highlanders the privilege of marching through the streets with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed. The Regiment was originally granted the Freedom of the City in 1996.

Streets will remain open during the parade, with a police es**rt accompanying the Regiment and military pipes and drums providing music along the route.

We are excited to announce that the 2027 Eastern Canadian Ringette Championships will be hosted in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, from April 15-18, 2027!

This marks an exciting milestone for ringette, as it will be the first time the Championships are held in Sydney. Importantly, hosting the Championships in Sydney will help bring one of ringette’s premier events directly to athletes and families in Cape Breton, creating new opportunities to inspire local players, showcase the sport, and strengthen the growth of ringette in the region.

We are so excited to host this incredible Championship in 2027!
