đź’ś Last week, we joined Health Care Foundations of Nova Scotia (HCFNS) for their Spring Forum and Annual General Meeting.

The event also marked the transition of our CEO, Paula MacNeil, from Chair to Past Chair of HCFNS. We are incredibly proud of her leadership and the contributions she has made to advancing health care philanthropy throughout the province.

The forum brought together representatives from dozens of hospital and health care foundations to share ideas, discuss emerging opportunities in health care philanthropy, and strengthen connections across the sector.

Paula, Caitlyn, Paige, and Máire had the opportunity to connect with colleagues, share ideas, and learn from the experiences of other health care foundations.

Thank you to HCFNS and all participants for another valuable opportunity to connect, learn, and collaborate in support of stronger health care for communities throughout Nova Scotia. đź’ś

Exploring the new Kyle Anne MacDonald Cancer Centre!

Last week, Paula, Caitlyn and Paige had the privilege of touring the under-construction cancer centre. It was an extra special trip as they were joined by local artist Gordon Kennedy, of Ironart and his wife Dominique de Rouin Kennedy, who will be creating a sculpture to stand in the Centre’s courtyard. This meaningful piece will be installed thanks to donor generosity.

The level of thought and care going into the build of this new Centre is heartwarming, and we can’t wait to continue seeing progress being made.

Thank you to the Nova Scotia Health Redevelopment Team and Build Nova Scotia for allowing us on-site!

A big congratulations to the Gail Bonar Finney and Kevin Carey Memorial Dart Shoot! đź’ś

At our Annual General Meeting, they were recognized as one of the recipients of our Foundation’s Service Award, celebrating more than 10 years of fundraising support here at home.

Though their “main event” is officially a dart tournament, it is so much more than that. The group hosts silent auctions, raffle draws, 50/50 draws, and more.

What began as a small gathering has grown into a powerful show of community support -bringing people together year after year to give back and strengthen health care in Cape Breton.

With more than $100,000 raised for the Tom McNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund, their efforts continue supporting those who need it most, where they need it most - at home.

Congratulations, and THANK YOU for making a meaningful difference đź’ś

This event was recognized with our Foundation’s Service Award at our Annual General Meeting, celebrating more than 10 years of supporting care in our community, right here at home.

Held in loving memory of their wife and mother, the tournament, hosted at Alderdale Greens, brings people together each year to give back - raising more than $56,000 for the Tom McNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund and helping ensure support is available when it’s needed most.

We are deeply grateful to the Lewis family and everyone involved for their continued compassion, generosity, and commitment to health care in Cape Breton.

Congratulations Bras d’Or Elementary! 💜

They are one of the recipients of our Foundation’s Service Award, awarded at our Annual General Meeting. This award is presented to community groups who have demonstrated 10 or more consecutive years of fundraising, here at home.

Led by incredible teachers and staff, students at Bras d’Or Elementary continue to show that age is no barrier to making a difference. Through annual walks and fundraising initiatives, they have raised more than $40,000 over the past 10 years in support of our Foundation and the Tom McNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund.

Their generosity helps support up to 100 cancer patients each month, allowing individuals and families to access support during some of their most difficult days.

We are incredibly grateful to the students, staff, and school community at Bras d’Or Elementary for their compassion, generosity, and continued commitment to supporting health care, right here at home.

Congratulations, and THANK YOU for giving where you live, because you care đź’ś

Congratulations Breton Brewing Co.!

Breton Brewing is another recipient of our Foundation’s Service Award, which recognizes volunteer community groups and organizations that have supported our Foundation through fundraising efforts for 10 or more consecutive years.

Since first partnering with our Foundation, Breton Brewing Co. has consistently shown up for our community - hosting monthly trivia nights, sponsoring events, participating in burger month, providing product support, and recently launching their “Good News” campaign highlighting charities in our community – our Foundation was grateful to be the recipient of $10,000 from this campaign.

Over the past 10 years, their efforts have contributed more than $44,000 in support of health care in Cape Breton..

We are incredibly grateful to owners Andrew Morrow, Bryan MacDonald, and the entire Breton Brewing team for their generosity, partnership, and unwavering commitment to our community.

Congratulations, and THANK YOU for making a difference đź’ś

A well-deserved congratulations to Island Breast Friends đź’ś

At our Annual General Meeting, they were recognized as one of the recipients of our Foundation’s Service Award, honouring groups who have been fundraising for 10 or more consecutive years here at home.

What started as a shared journey through breast cancer has grown into more than a decade of giving back. Through cookbook sales, raffles, and personally delivering comfort baskets, this incredible group continues to support friends, families, and neighbours across our community.

Over the years, they’ve raised more than $112,000 for the Tom McNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund - helping eliminate barriers to care and allowing patients to focus on their health, rather than their finances, during some of their most difficult days.

Congratulations, and THANK YOU for giving where you live, because you care đź’ś

đź’ś GEM Feature: Linda Fortune đź’ś

Linda Fortune spent years working in Physiotherapy at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Northside General, supporting patients through recovery from illness, injury, and surgery.

Today, she continues to give back as a monthly donor through our GEM (Give Every Month) program - and has been giving since 2008, supporting patients and families, right here at home.

Her reasons for giving are also personal. Her husband received dialysis care for 15 years, while her parents both relied on care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

“This is my small way of saying thank you. So many in health care go above and beyond for their patients every day.”

Join Linda and become a GEM - helping support those who need it most.

We are proud to recognize RE/MAX Park Place Inc. as this year’s recipient of the Jack Yazer Caring Spirit Award! 💜

Presented in memory of Dr. Jack Yazer, a driving force behind the creation of our Foundation, this award honours those who demonstrate a deep commitment to community and make a meaningful impact on health care in Cape Breton.

Since 2007, RE/MAX Park Place has been a dedicated support of our Foundation, helping Cape Bretoners access care when they need it most. Through annual fundraisers and ongoing contributions, they have supported individuals and families traveling off-island for specialized care – helping cover costs like gas, accommodations, and meals.

Over the past two decades, their efforts have raised more than $189,000, allowing Cape Bretoners to focus on their health, rather than their finances, during some of their most vulnerable days.

We are incredibly grateful to Valerie Sampson and the entire RE/MAX Park Place team for their generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to our community.

Congratulations, and THANK YOU for making a difference. đź’ś
