💜 $3,109.12 raised at the Dorko Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament.

Held June 13 and 14 at Neville Park in Whitney Pier, the annual tournament honours three siblings: Stephen Dorko, Sheldon “Spanky” Dorko, and Samantha Dorko.

Since 2014, friends and family have hosted the tournament as a meaningful way to remember Stephen, Sheldon, and Samantha, and the impact they had on their community.

This year, the tournament supported the Mental Health and Addictions Patient Care Fund, helping support those who need it most in Cape Breton – Unama’ki.

THANK YOU to the Dorko family, tournament organizers, players, volunteers, and everyone who supported this year’s event. Your generosity is helping strengthen care, right here at home. 💜

💜 Unblock the Clot! 💜

Janelle Tierney is bringing Unblock the Clot back to the CBU Soccer Field on October 10 in support of thrombosis awareness and the Vital Patient-Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

For Janelle, this event is deeply personal.

At 19, while studying for a Bachelor of Science and playing for the goCAPERSgo Cape Breton University Women's Soccer at Cape Breton University, Janelle injured her hip and underwent surgery.

Three weeks later, she began experiencing pain in her shoulder that worsened and spread into her lungs, back, and chest. After going to the emergency department, she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and later, a pulmonary infarction.

Today, Janelle is using her experience to help others recognize the signs and symptoms of thrombosis, while also giving back to support those who need it most through the Vital Patient-Care Fund.

💜 Run for Radio Day! 💜

Herbie Sakalauskas is back with another incredible challenge in support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Last year, Herbie ran the 276 km Cabot Trail Relay route over four days, helping raise funds to purchase a LUCAS CPR Device and 12 sleeper chairs for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

This year, he is going even bigger.

Starting October 6, Herbie will run the full 298 km Cabot Trail loop around the clock, with the goal of crossing the finish line on October 8 during Radio Day.

Funds raised will support this year’s Radio Day campaign to purchase two new portable x-ray machines for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. For critically ill patients, these machines allow essential imaging to be done right at the bedside rather than transporting vulnerable patients through the hospital- making an important difference to patient care and safety.

Ashley was a force. 💜

This Radio Day, we are remembering Ashley Hareguy: A loving mom and sister, a devoted friend, an incredible nurse and a passionate advocate for patients and families in Cape Breton.

After being diagnosed with glioblastoma at just 34, Ashley was told she had one year to live. She fought for six years, and spent much of that time raising her young daughter, Josie, and giving back to our community.

This Radio Day, October 8, we’re raising funds for new portable X-ray units for our hospital. During some of her final months, Ashley experienced firsthand the importance of this equipment.

When you’re sick and vulnerable, having the x-ray technology come to your bedside means less time away from your loved ones, less energy spent, and more comfort and dignity for patients.

Ashley passed away surrounded by her family in August 2025. Her family and friends are honouring her legacy by helping bring portable X-ray units to the hospital she cared so deeply about.
