Emergency Preparedness Week Tip:

Try a 'what if' dinner conversation: 'What if the power went out right now? What if we heard a SaskAlert tone? What would we do first?' Kids learn best in calm moments β€” not during the emergency itself.

Keep Preparing!

πŸŒͺ️ It’s Emergency Preparedness Week! Are you Tornado & Storm Ready?

Severe weather can happen fast. Take a few minutes today to:
βœ”οΈ Know your safe place (basement or interior room, away from windows)
βœ”οΈ Build or refresh your emergency kit (water, flashlight, batteries, first aid)
βœ”οΈ Stay informed with weather alerts and local updates
βœ”οΈ Make a family plan so everyone knows what to do

Being prepared isn’t complicated, but it can make all the difference. Stay safe and ready this storm season!

SASKATCHEWAN FLOODS: 15 states of emergency currently declared in Saskatchewan!

This week is emergency preparedness week! Our weather, our landscape, and the world around us is unpredictable, but what you can do to help yourself is be prepared

DAY 3: Build Your 72-Hour Kit πŸŽ’
Public Safety Canada is clear: every household should be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. As this week on the prairies tells a very real story, help may be delayed in arriving due to severe flooding and impassible roads, or for a host of various other reasons.

Day 2 of Emergency Preparedness Week! πŸ“‹

Quick question: Do you and your family know what to do if there was imminent danger of a tornado going through Swift Current?

If you hesitated β€” this post is for you.

A household emergency plan doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to exist. In Swift Current, your should plan for:

πŸŒͺ️ Where do you shelter for a tornado? (Lowest floor, interior room, away from windows)
πŸš— When it is safe to travel, what are your TWO evacuation routes out of the city?
πŸ“ž Do you have an out of city or out of province contact?
🏫 What's your protocol if the kids are at school when an emergency hits?
🏠 Where is your family meeting spot if you can't reach each other?
πŸ”’ Do you know how to shut of your house gas and water?

Write it. Print it. Put it on the fridge. Practice it once a year.

It's Emergency Preparedness Week 2026! 🌾

The national theme from Public Safety Canada is clear:
BE PREPARED. KNOW YOUR RISKS.

Here in Swift Current, our prairies are beautiful β€” and they can be unforgiving. Do you know the six hazards most likely to affect your family?

🌊 Flooding: Swift Current Creek and overland water from heavy rainfall
❄️ Blizzards & extreme cold: multi-day whiteouts, dangerous windchill, road closures
πŸŒͺ️ Tornadoes & plow winds: plow winds can level buildings with almost no warning
πŸ”₯ Wildfire smoke: prairie grassland fires and regional smoke events
🌑️ Extreme heat & drought: dangerous heat events are increasing on the prairies
⚑ Severe thunderstorms: hail, lightning, high winds, flash flooding

Your first step this Emergency Preparedness Week: find out which of these affects YOU the most!

It's Emergency Preparedness Week, May 3 - 9, 2026. At the last Council Meeting, we heard from Marlene Funk, Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Swift Current, accompanied by City of Swift Current Fire Chief Ryan Hunter, about the importance of Being Prepared, and Knowing Your Risks. Think we don't have to prepare for emergencies in our area? Check out this page for all kinds of resources on the most common natural and human-cause risks and hazards that occur in Saskatchewan: https://www.swiftcurrent.ca/divisions/emergency-services/emergency-planning

Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we take time to remember the workers who were injured or lost their lives because of their work.

πŸ•ŠοΈ In 2024, there were 27 workplace fatalities in our province β€” lives lost to both traumatic incidents and occupational disease. Each year, about 2,400 workers also suffer serious injuries.

We honour those workers by renewing our commitment to safe workplaces and by looking out for one another, so everyone can go home safely to their families. 🀍

At last night's Council Meeting, Council issued a proclamation in recognition of the "National Day of Mourning". The City's Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator, Britton Cowman, presented the proclamation accompanied by the City's Director of People and Culture, Dawne Hildebrandt, who shared a personal experience that helped connect the proclamation to real-life loss. Since 1989, every April 28th Canadians take a moment to recognize and reflect upon people who were fatally or seriously injured or developed illness as result of their job. According to the Workers' Compensation Board, 27 Saskatchewan workers lost their lives on the job in 2025. Today, the flags at City Hall and the Fire Hall are being flown at half-mast in recognition of this important annual reflection. Learn more about the at https://www.ccohs.ca/events/mourning
