Mountain View County continues to monitor wildfire RWF036 located near Bearberry, northwest of Sundre near Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) and Highway 584.

According to Alberta Wildfire, improved mapping and assessment of the wildfire has determined the fire is now estimated at approximately 1,028 hectares in size and remains classified as out of control. Firefighters, supported by air tankers, helicopters, and heavy equipment, continue suppression efforts.

Clearwater County continues to request that campers, backcountry users and traffic in the area immediately leave and that others avoid the area. Highway 40 closures remain in effect.

Through ongoing discussions with Alberta Forestry, Mountain View County has been advised there is currently no immediate risk to Mountain View County residents or communities.

As this wildfire is located within Clearwater County and the Forest Protection Area, residents are encouraged to follow Alberta Wildfire and Clearwater County for the most current wildfire-specific updates and information. Mountain View County continues to work closely with provincial agencies and neighbouring municipalities and remains prepared should conditions change. Mountain View County will continue to provide updates to residents should risk levels or impacts to County communities change.

We are aware of questions regarding Fire Restrictions and Fire Bans within the County. Mountain View County currently has a Fire Restriction in place. Although this wildfire, RWF036, is located within the Forest Protection Area managed by Alberta Forestry, the County continues to monitor local fire risk within its own jurisdiction in consultation with local Fire Chiefs to determine whether further measures, including a potential Fire Ban, may be warranted. The County remains committed to reviewing fire risk conditions in advance of the long weekend.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the County’s official communication channels.
