During the Second World War, Canadian troops were stationed in our hometown. My 86-year-old Dad, Austin Lusted, still remembers standing by his home on Whatlington Road, in Battle, England, as the soldiers rolled past in their trucks.

Two young men suddenly jumped down — brothers — and called out to ask if he knew the Lusted family. They were Canadian Lusted cousins! They popped into the house for a quick visit, shared smiles and stories, and left the boys with a precious gift in wartime Britain — chocolate and candies.

A small, sweet moment of family connection across an ocean, remembered all these years later. 🌍🍫💖

Today we remember all those who served and sacrificed their lives in war and conflict.

Pictured below are the Men of the 7th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment (17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars), photographed in the grounds of Battle Abbey, 1943. These men would be responsible for protecting the Sussex coast, and subsequently liberating Nazi-occupied lands in France.
A full circle moment in history, an inscription at the Bayeux War Cemetery reads: “We, once conquered by William, had now set free the Conqueror's native land”

We will remember them.
