Wheatland County

Wheatland County Wheatland County is a municipal district located East of Calgary. Covering 4,539 km², more than 8000 people call Wheatland County home.

Twelve of the twenty-four distinct communities in the County are officially recognized as hamlets. The hamlets are overseen by the County while the Villages of Hussar, Standard and Rockyford, and the Town of Strathmore are self-governed. In terms of population, Carseland is the County’s largest hamlet with 568 residents (2011). As the name suggests, Wheatland County’s largest industry is agricultu

re. Beef and grain production make up the largest agricultural activity with many other agri-businesses emerging, such as agri-tourism and seed cleaning. In addition to agriculture, construction and mineral extraction also contribute largely to the local economy. While some communities are growing, Wheatland County is still very much a rural municipality. A land area of 4,539 km² places the County’s population density at just under 2 people per km². Wheatland County is governed by an elected County Council, made up of six councillors and one Reeve. Council provides direction, while the county operations are conducted by a team of employees, led by a Chief Administrative Officer. Together, Council and administration work towards the mission and vision of Wheatland County.

Attention Rosebud residents: A contractor will be in the area from September 23 to 30 to flush septic tanks at properties on the east side of Rosebud.

Please watch for a door hanger with additional information.

To help the work proceed smoothly, residents are asked to provide either:
• A 5-gallon bucket of clean water, or
• Access to a garden hose near the septic tank for rinsing.

Back to School Safety Reminder 🚌

School is back in session! While Wheatland County has school zones at Wheatland Crossing, Rural Route Agriculture Academy, and Carseland School, student safety matters everywhere.

School buses travel County roads daily, and students may be crossing the road to get on or off the bus. Please slow down, stay alert, and always stop for a school bus with flashing red lights.

Help keep students safe this school year; watch for children and give buses plenty of space.

Four-way stops can be confusing, but knowing who has the right of way helps keep everyone moving safely.

• First to stop, first to go. If you arrive first, you generally have the right of way.
• Arrive at the same time? The vehicle on the right gets to go first.
• Make eye contact and always stay alert. Never assume another driver sees you or will follow the rules.

Wheatland County is aware that some Muirfield residents have noticed changes in their water’s taste, odor, or appearance. Independent laboratory testing has confirmed that the water remains safe to consume and continues to meet provincial and federal health standards.⁣
⁣
These temporary changes are aesthetic and may be caused by naturally occurring substances, minerals, or sediment. The County continues to monitor water quality and take steps to improve raw water quality.⁣
