Happy apple season! Perth County is part of the apple belt in Ontario and has been for many years. With the region being rich with orchards historically, this opened the door for several c***r mills to be established.

One of these historic mills was on Napier Street in Mitchell, operated by Frederick William “Fred” Hennick. Hennick was born in Ontario in 1894 to farmers Daniel and Cristina. His father Daniel ran a chopping and c***r mill before him, along with what the “Atwood Bee” newspaper called a jelly factory, in Logan Township. He was also known as a very successful poultry farmer. It was claimed in local newspapers that he had one of the largest barns in Canada during the late 1890s. Hennick’s apple orchard wasn’t just a spot to grow apples; according to newspapers from the time, it was also sometimes used as a community event space with weddings held in the orchard and Lutheran church services held outside among the apple trees. The Hennick family was listed as living on Lot 23, Concession 6 in the 1901 Perth County Directory, with Fred continuing to live on the farm after his father’s death in 1930. Fred appears to have also carried on the family apple butter and c***r-making business. The c***r mill on Napier Street in Mitchell typically operated seasonally from October through November. Fred appears to have operated the mill late into his life until his death 1964. Municipality of West Perth
