The flag in front of Stratford City Hall and other municipal facilities has been lowered today in recognition of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, which is Sunday.

It honours those Canadian firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty, and highlights the critical role they play every day in helping to keep our community safe.

It's also an opportunity, on the anniversary of the deadly 9/11 terrorist attacks, to reflect on the bravery and selflessness of those who responded to the call of duty on that day.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION SATURDAY

The City of Stratford will be holding its final Household Hazardous Waste collection of the year this Saturday (Sept. 12).

The collection will take place at the landfill site at 777 Romeo Street South from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Trained professionals will be on hand to safely receive things like:

* Paints (please do not bring empty containers), varnish, solvents, caulking, glue
* Fuels, antifreeze, brake fluid
* Used motor oil and filters
* Batteries (household, rechargeable, automotive)
* Household cleaners (i.e. bleach, oven cleaners)
* Fluorescent light bulbs/tubes
* Refillable and non-refillable propane tanks

For more information, please visit www.stratford.ca/hazardouswaste

Based on feedback from the community highlighting the need for more collection days, we are currently considering some changes to next year’s household hazardous waste collection program.

In order to do that, we need permission from the Ministry of Environment to amend our Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA), which sets the days and times when household hazardous waste can be collected.

That approval was recently granted by the Ministry, which means we can now consider options for more flexibility in our collection program.

We will provide further updates, and an opportunity to provide your input on how the program could look, as soon as possible.
