NLCC Erwin J. Stolk

NLCC Erwin J. Stolk Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) Erwin J. Stolk is a program for youth aged 9-12 years old. Some corps host occasional weekend activities or trips, as well.

The program fosters the development of leadership skills, citizenship, and physical fitness in an environment that emphasizes inclusivity, teamwork, and friendship. Our program welcomes youth between the ages of 9 and 12 for fun, naval-themed activities. This program is independently operated by the Navy League of Canada, with the help of hundreds of dedicated volunteers across the nation. There a

re more than 3,000 Navy League Cadets active in over 100 communities across Canada. The Navy League Cadet program aims to help young Canadians learn life skills including citizenship, teamwork and self-discipline. Our programming is designed to help cadets become more aware of the world around them, become self-sufficient and confident in their own skills. Throughout their training, Navy League Cadets learn what good leadership looks like, how to work together, and how to overcome challenges. Youth leave the program with a genuine interest in their community’s well-being and equipped with skills to become active citizens. Navy League Cadets learn many skills through fun activities, which vary depending on region. These activities can include: Sailing, Camping, Swimming, Music, Sports, Parades, First-Aid, Water Safety, Communications, and Trips. With such a wide variety of activities, you will be sure to find something for you! Most corps (pronounced “core” – that’s what we call each group) meet one evening each week from September to June. The cost of joining the program varies depending on the corps and the activities they offer. To help make the program accessible to all, cadets and their parents are required to participate in fundraising activities. Cadet uniforms are provided by The Navy League of Canada. Cadets are required to maintain their uniforms and return them when they leave the program. NLCC Erwin J. Stolk has been active in Parkland County since 2007.

One of the oldest traditions in naval heritage is “rowing the Old Man ashore” — a symbolic farewell to a Commanding Officer at the end of their command. ⚓🇨🇦

Last night, following the NLCC Erwin J. Stolk Change of Command Ceremony, we proudly carried on that tradition for Lt. Stolk. It was a fitting way to honour years of leadership and dedication to the corps.

Fair winds and following seas, Sir. Your impact on this corps will not be forgotten.

Behind every happy Cadet is a place to belong, friendships that become family, leaders who care, and memories that last a lifetime ⚓️💙

Our “Anatomy of a Happy Cadet” presentation highlights how mental health is an important part of science and personal well-being. Through teamwork, laughter, leadership, confidence, and shared experiences, our Cadets explored what helps create a positive and supportive environment within our Corps.

We asked one simple question:“What is your favourite part of Cadets?”

The answers remind us why this program matters so much.

Thank you to our incredible Cadets, staff, volunteers, Branch members, and families for making this year one to remember. ⚓️

As Executive Officer, I could not be more proud of our Cadets and everything they accomplished during today’s Annual Inspection. They carried themselves with professionalism, respect, confidence, and teamwork, while still being themselves and showing the strong spirit of our corps. Hearing so many compliments from our VIPs and visitors about the quality of our Cadets and that this was one of the best Annual Inspections they have attended in years means so much to all of us.

It has been an absolute honour serving this corps for the past four years as both Training Officer and Executive Officer. Watching our team grow and succeed together has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. I want to sincerely thank all of our Officer Staff for their dedication, hard work, and support that made today possible.

A special thank you as well to Lieutenant Eve Comer for serving as our Reviewing Officer today and for taking the time to be part of such an important event for our corps.

To our Cadets — today you made us incredibly proud. ⚓💙

Yours Aye,

Lt (NL) Thorne
