Think spring while knotting a plant hanger for your patio or sunny window!

Macrame is a technique for creating elaborate textiles using a knotting method of needlework. It dates back to the ancient Babylon and the Assyrian peoples of what is now known as Iraq. The name comes from the Arabic word Migramah, the Andalusian-Arabic word Macramia and the Turkish word Makrama. The style was brought to Western Europe with the Moorish conquest of Spain making its way to England in the time of Queen Mary II in the late 17th Century, gaining prominence in the court of Queen Victoria who made it a household craft, which has lead to its continued popularity in the west today.

Cost: $30 per participant

The workshops are held in the Circa 1873 Carriage House on the grounds of the Erland Lee (Museum) Home, 552 Ridge Road, Stoney Creek (at the top of the Dewitt access) and are fundraisers for the upkeep of the Museum. Owned and operated by the Women’s Institutes of Ontario!

After the success of the meeting on February 12th Erland asked the Farmer’s Institute if they could hire Adelaide for a second night as the Ladies Night group wanted to hear more of what was said. Erland was informed that the Ladies night budget had been used for that year and that they would need to wait for the next year’s event. Erland discussed this with Janet, and they decided that a year was too long to wait. Erland and Janet decided to rent Squire’s Hall with their own funds for February 19th. Janet and Erland also took it upon themselves to write 100 invitations for their nearest neighbours and to hand deliver the invitations using their cutter sleigh (a cutter sleigh is on display in the Carriage house at the Erland Lee (Museum) Home).

On February 19th all 101 women plus Erland Lee showed up at Squires Hall to hear Adelaide Hunter Hoodless speak once more. At the end of the meeting, the group had decided to form an organization for the advancement of Women. Originally this organization was to be called the ‘Mother’s Institute’ but some amongst this group realized that might exclude those women who were not yet mothers. This was changed to Women’s Institute. A name that has stayed consistent for over 126 years, ad has inspired many organizations and people around the world.

Of the 101 women who listened to Adelaide speak that night 63 joined the original charter branch, as can be seen on a poster in the museum created in 1934 to commemorate the organization.



Fun Fact: February 19th has been declared Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario day in Essa Township, Ontario.

On February 12th, 1897 Erland Lee rented Squire's Hall, now 8 King St. This was the Ladies' night of the Farmer's Institute, an annual opportunity for the wives, daughters, sisters of Farmer's Institute members to enjoy an informative evening. Erland hired Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, against the wishes of his more conservative Farmer's Institute brethren. This would lead to great things for his community and the world, as we shall discuss on February 19th.
