In celebration of Earth Day, top ten finalists presented their proposals for the Caring for Our Watersheds Manitoba contest. This year, 634 students from 20 schools submitted 387 proposals to positively impact their watershed. Nutrien, the contest sponsor, also provided an additional $10,000 to help all contestants implement their ideas. These projects showcase the creative ways that students have proposed to make a positive impact in their watersheds.

How very interesting! 🦆

This bird is challenging our idea of “normal.” While about 60% of our GPS-marked mallards return to the same general wintering area each year, and most males end up in different breeding spots as they follow hens, this drake has written his own script. In the past 2.5 years, he has flown 7,700 miles and wintered in three different regions, but he keeps returning to the same wetland complex in the prairie potholes of southwestern Manitoba for the summer. He looks to be headed there again now, and we’ll check back in once he settles in for the summer.
