We are excited to announce that we have posted a new fundraising tracker in the front of our current station in support of our future station! While we have been saving for some time, we wanted to share our progress with our community so you can be a part of the excitement and the journey ahead.
So, why are we planning for a new fire station?
From the outside, our station may look fine. Inside, however, we have reached it's limits.
Our current station:
• Limits the number of firefighters we can accommodate
• Cannot fit many modern, taller fire apparatus
• Has extremely limited space between trucks and firefighter gear
• Stores our PPE in the same area as our apparatus
• Has no proper showers or post-incident decontamination area
• Is not fully accessible for members of the public
• Was not designed for the technology, equipment, and challenges firefighters face today
We have been planning for the future for several years. We presented our 5-10 year plan to Stewiacke Town Council in 2023, 2025 and 2026, and in June 2026 a report was submitted requesting that the land in front of our current station be designated for a future fire station.
We also hired architect to compare our station with other departments serving similar populations, areas and call volumes. The conclusion was clear: our facility is significantly undersized for the demands being placed on it.
Firefighting has changed. Our community is growing. Technology and equipment are evolving, and the challenges firefighters face are becoming more complex. We aren't planning a station for today. We are planning for the next 50 years.
That is why we are starting our fundraising efforts now. This isn't about building a bigger or fancier fire hall. It's about building a safer, more functional and accessible facility that allows our volunteers to train, respond, and operate effectively. This will allow us to continue providing the best possible emergency service to the Town of Stewiacke, Municipality of Colchester, and beyond.
We have a lot of work ahead of us, and it will take several years of hard work, fundraising, and community support to make this vision a reality.
We look forward to sharing our progress with you along the way.
