TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE – SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

Please be advised of a temporary road closure on Sunday, September 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to safely accommodate the Kids of Steel Triathlon.

Road Closure:

The temporary road closure will extend from the Caribou Curling Club on Massachusetts Drive to the bridge on West Street where it meets Massachusetts Drive.

Youth participating in the Kids of Steel Triathlon will be completing the cycling and running portions of the event along this route.

For the safety of the young athletes, volunteers, motorists, and spectators, please avoid the affected section of road during this time and respect all road closure barriers and directions from event personnel.

Access to Nearby Facilities:

Massachusetts Drive toward Port Harmon will remain accessible.

The following facilities will also remain accessible by vehicle using the roads behind and around the Bay St. George YMCA and Caribou Curling Club:

• Harmon Ball Diamonds
• Skate Park
• Outdoor Courts

Dog Park Access:

The Dog Park will not be accessible by vehicle during the temporary road closure.

The Dog Park itself will remain accessible to those travelling on foot via the Stephenville Heritage Trail.

Regional Aquatic Center Detour:

If you need to access the Regional Aquatic Center during the temporary road closure, please use the following detour:

Caroline Avenue → Alabama Drive → Oregon Drive → Tennessee Drive → Regional Aquatic Center

Please allow additional travel time and refer to the attached images for route information.

Bay St. George RCMP thanks Stephenville GSAR for successful rescue of off-road riders

Bay St. George RCMP and Stephenville Ground Search and Rescue safely located two off-road vehicle riders on Saturday after they reported being lost on a backcountry trail.

Around 5:45 on Friday, August 7, Bay St. George RCMP received a call from an ATV operator requesting assistance. The operator and their passenger were traveling the backcountry, headed towards Serpentine Lake, when they became lost. The pair were able to provide police with their coordinates and a description of their appearance and the area. They also indicated that they were well-prepared with food, water and supplies.

Police engaged Stephenville Ground Search and Rescue, who located the pair safe and in good health on Saturday afternoon. They were escorted to safety, and were able to resume their travels.

This incident is a valuable reminder of the importance of packing the right gear before you head out on your next adventure. The pair were prepared with a communications device, shelter, food and water for their trip, and were able to stay safe and healthy until assistance arrived.

Across Newfoundland and Labrador, Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) teams go above and beyond to help those who find themselves in emergency situations and or in need of aid. On the evening of Friday, August 7th, our team was activated by the RCMP to assist in locating two individuals on ATVs in the Lewis Hills/Gallants area. The pair had become lost and bogged down in challenging terrain as daylight faded.

Our volunteers deployed immediately, searching throughout the night and into Saturday. Thanks to the coordinated effort of our searchers and members of the Bay St. George detachment of the RCMP, the couple was located safe, sound, and in good health on Saturday afternoon, and they were assisted out of the backcountry.

With backcountry and ATV season in full swing across Western Newfoundland, terrain can change rapidly and even familiar trails can become disorienting. If you are heading out, please remember to follow the Three Ts:

Trip Planning: Always leave a detailed trip plan with a responsible friend or family member, including your intended route and an agreed-upon return time. If your plans change, let them know.

Training: Ensure your skills and your machine are up to the challenge of the terrain you are tackling. Know how to navigate using physical maps and a compass alongside your GPS.

Take the Essentials: Weather and trail conditions can turn quickly. Always pack extra fuel, a first aid kit, reliable communication tools (such as a satellite messenger or inReach), warm and waterproof layers, emergency shelter, fire-starting gear, extra food, and water.

If you get lost or stuck, stay with your vehicle, stay warm, and call for help as early as possible. Safe trails, everyone!

✅ Consider hiking with a friend or group.
✅ Always tell someone where you are going, when you plan to get back and what your planned route is.
✅ Know your limits and choose a hike that matches your experience and abilities.
✅ Pack emergency supplies, like a first aid kit, flashlight and whistle, and adequate food and water.

This grant will allow our team to advance our training and rescue response with more modern equipment. Thank you so much to the people at Rocky Talkie and congratulations to the other successful SAR teams. PUBLIC ADVISORY: Earlier today, Bay St. George RCMP was advised that a historic military mu****on was discovered near St. George’s. That item was voluntarily turned over to the RCMP.

The item has been secured and will be continuously monitored until experts with the Department of National Defence can properly dispose of it. These experts have been already been engaged and will arrive in the province as soon as possible.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is proceeding with an abundance of caution. Officers are currently going door-to-door in the immediate area surrounding the RCMP detachment on Oregon Drive in Stephenville, where the item is being stored, to advise residents of the risk and assist them in voluntarily evacuating the area, if they feel safer doing so.

The RCMP detachment in Stephenville will also be closed to the public until further notice. To report an incident that requires a police response, but is not an emergency, please contact the RCMP non-emergency line at 1-800-709-7267 (RCMP). In an emergency, always call 9-1-1.
