**THANK YOU, STELLARTON!**

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Stellarton Police annual “Cram the Cruiser” Food Drive! Because of your generosity, more than five carts of food and non-food essentials, plus about $1,500 in cash donations was collected.

Your kindness helps us support local families who rely on the foodbank, especially as we head into the winter season. Every can, every dollar, and every act of kindness makes a real difference.💕

Thank you to the Stellarton Police Department who hosted this annual food drive - — we couldn’t do this without you!

Police Governance – Why Local Matters

Did you know that municipal police in Nova Scotia report to a local police board made up of citizens and councilors who are responsible for strategic oversight, governance and assist with budget planning?

The police board does not have any influence over police operations or investigations but does ensure policies and procedures are current and reflective of the community’s needs.

The police board is a conduit for community to have input and help set local policing priorities which fosters a strong connection between the police service and the community.

The Truro Police Board has representation from Truro’s African Nova Scotian community, Millbrook First Nation, and citizens with a wide variety of life experience and backgrounds.

The Truro Police Board Members are Chair – Wayne Talbot, Amber Ball-Ritcey, Joanne Jordan, Laura Whiteland, Adam Francis, Bill Thomas, and Deb Pryor.

Benefits of a local police board model:

1) Increased Accountability and Responsiveness: Police services overseen by a police board with community representatives, are more directly accountable to the residents. This structure ensures that policing priorities and strategies are developed locally and are responsive to the community's specific concerns and needs.

2) Enhanced Community Trust and Relationships: Consistent interaction between officers and residents is a key aspect of community policing, helping build familiarity, trust, and positive relationships.

3) Proactive and Preventive Policing: Instead of just reacting to crimes, local governance models encourage a proactive, problem-solving approach to crime prevention by working with community to address concerns.

4) Transparency: The local governance structure includes civilian oversight mechanisms, which helps ensure greater transparency and decision-making, which is crucial for maintaining public confidence and trust.

Children, parents and other adults are reminded to be extra careful on Halloween Friday with heavy rain and wind in the forecast. (Province of Nova Scotia / File)

Families are advised to use caution during Halloween with Environment Canada forecasting heavy rain and strong winds across most of the province on Friday, October 31.

Wet and windy conditions may create lower visibility and increased hazards like slippery sidewalks and debris on streets.

“We know how much kids look forward to dressing up and collecting treats. With heavy rain and wind, we want to make sure that kids stay safe on this exciting day. So hold onto your hats and walk carefully with an adult,” said Kim Masland, Minister of Emergency Management. “The candy will taste all the sweeter when everyone is safe. Whether you’re trick-or-treating outside or celebrating indoors, I hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.”

Safety reminders:

- make sure children are visible in the dark – they should carry a flashlight or glow stick and have reflectors on costumes
- parents should carry a cell phone to receive any weather or safety-related alerts
- look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks whenever possible
- be alert for fallen branches and other debris, as well as puddles
drive carefully and watch for pedestrians, who may be harder to see in the dark and rain
- always trick-or-treat with a group of friends or a trusted adult
- never go into a stranger’s house or car
- have an adult check candy before it is eaten.

Any localized flooding or weather-related hazards should be reported to local authorities.

Quick Facts:
- 30 to 50 millimetres of rain is expected in Nova Scotia on Friday
- some areas of the province could see wind gusts reaching 75 km/h
- the remains of hurricane Melissa will be passing south of Nova Scotia on Friday, likely adding to expected rainfall from another weather system
- inclement weather may result in community Halloween events being cancelled; people should check for updates in their area
