The SRRWD Abandon Well Sealing program provides funds for landowners to seal wells that have been abandoned. The purpose of the program is to protect against groundwater contamination from pollutants that may enter the well from surface water runoff. The SRRWD will pay up to 100% of the total cost (to a maximum of $2000) for the well sealing project. The landowner must also provide before and after pictures of the well site.

Fall cover crops are getting growing now! Plants like fall rye and wheat are great crops to keep a root in the ground over winter, adding stability, feeding microbes, and improving soil health! Fall Rye has the added benefit that it continues growing in spring before anything else will. It needs to be terminated in the spring, and can be used as green manure and to add organic matter to the soil.

Field erosion is a common problem that producers deal with, especially on fields with more slope. Rain can be a powerful thing, taking valuable topsoil with it as it flows across the landscape.

A key to reducing erosion is to always have a living root in the ground, an example of this would be perennial grasses for forage, cover crops, or even buffer strips along field edges.

These aren't always possible, and there are some other methods to reducing future erosion if it's already left it's mark. Small structures built across gullies allow for water to slow down, topsoil to settle, and water to slowly drain through a culvert. These structures blend into the landscape if planted with grasses, and can be used as a path of travel over the sensitive area.

This example has an elbow on the uphill side of the structure to control the water level.

July was busy with tours and site visits! Our staff went to the annual MAW tour hosted by Whitemud Watershed District. We hosted the National ALUS tour where we showed ALUS members how we utilize their funding in our district: planting perennial buffer strips, tree planting and crossings, cover crops and soil health practices. We also hosted our sub-district members and RM council members for a tour of projects we're excited about, we went to an innovative water collection/retention pond, a perennial grass planting, and got our hands dirty looking at soil and a cover crop.

This International Lake Day is a day to recognize the value of lakes and how they are at risk! Lakes act as great habitats, they support plant and animal life of all kinds. They can supply drinking water, and water for agriculture; they are great places for recreation as well. But they are at risk due to increased pollutants in runoff, overuse, and climate change.
Caring for our watershed is caring for our lakes, the ones within our boundaries, and the ones which we pour in to.

The Prairie Watersheds Climate Program covers a variety of projects. The funding is used to accelerate the adoption and implementation of beneficial management practices (BMPs). The three BMP streams are:

1. Improving Nitrogen Management to ensure optimum productivity, reducing nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing economic profitability and environmental quality. This can be agronomic support to develop farm specific nutrient management plans, equipment modifications, and soil sampling.

2. Cover Cropping to protect and enhance the soil, capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing leaching, storing nitrogen for future crops, reducing erosion, and improving soil structure. This includes agronomic support and per-acre payments for establishing fall or spring planted cover crops.

3. Rotational Grazing which allows forage plants to recover and their roots to deepen, improving soil health between periods of grazing. Eligible activities can include agronomic support, adding cross fencing, watering systems, and forage seeds to establish rotational grazing.

Our rain garden thrived in the wet spring and is still doing great considering how dry it's been. This is the third year for our rain garden and the plants are really starting to spread and fill in all the gaps.
Since May, we have measured 6.93 inches of rain at the office. That means that with water collected from the roof, the rain garden has prevented nearly 6500 gallons of water from entering Steinbach's drainage system! (To help picture that, that is enough water to fill a 15ft round above ground pool 4.5 ft deep!). What amazing work such a small garden can do!

We've had a slow start to our construction projects as we waited for the ground to properly dry up. First on our list are a couple touch ups on last years projects and then on to new things!
Water retentions are capable of reducing flooding downstream by holding back water and slowly releasing it. This can prevent erosion and even road washouts in some places! In addition, they also create great wildlife habitat!
