The Conservatives finally released the Gull Island pricing, confirming what we suspected:

There’s no escalator. The price Quebec pays for our power goes down over time.

The timing is also telling. The pricing was released after J.P. Morgan and Power Advisory finished their sessions in the House, meaning they can no longer be questioned about it.

The federal government’s role in this agreement was to grow the projects.

They did.

Premier Wakeham’s job was to grow Newfoundland and Labrador’s share.

He didn’t.

One year later, Premier Wakeham’s very first promise to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians wasn’t worth the paper it was written on.

The negotiating team just confirmed:

The price Quebec pays for Gull Island power goes down over time.

Just like the Churchill Falls deal of 1969.

The Conservatives’ deal does not link the price Quebec pays for our resource to energy markets.
Quebec got all the upside in 1969.
Quebec is getting all the upside again.

For nearly 60 years, we watched as energy markets increased, year after year after year. All the while, Hydro-Québec was paying 0.2 cents per kWh— one fifth of a penny — for our power and selling it according to growing markets.

Imagine if the price had been linked to energy markets back in 1969.

In his opening remarks, Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott called Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who loudly oppose and question his Churchill Falls deal “do-nothings.”

It is disgraceful that this is how the Conservative Government views people who speak out, ask tough questions and voice their concerns on social media and programs like VOCM Open Line.

We’re in the House of Assembly tomorrow for the special sitting about the deal on Churchill Falls.

Here’s what we already know: the Premier and his Ministers don’t want to debate their deal.

Our Liberal team is prepared to ask the hard questions.

While the Conservatives are trying to hide from scrutiny, we’ll be there to make sure the questions they don’t want to answer get asked.

In the midst of fear, uncertainty and heartbreak, thousands of passengers from around the world were welcomed to Newfoundland and Labrador. Stranded far from home, they found compassion, kindness and a community willing to help.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives those whose lives were changed forever and the extraordinary humanity shown by the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Twenty-five years ago today, the world stood still as we watched the tragic events of 9/11 unfold.

In the middle of a difficult and uncertain time, thousands of international passengers found themselves in our province. Scared and worried, they found safety, compassion and kindness in Newfoundland and Labrador.

All these years later, we remember. We remember the lives lost and forever changed on that tragic day, and we remember the humanity that shone through during one of the darkest moments in our history.
