ART EXHIBIT:
'STUMPED'

Our boreal forest holds untold stories full of magic, science, and adventure. Stumped guides Botanical Garden guests though a Story Forest, where they will happen upon portals to the world of stories, transforming ordinary trails into magical literary waypoints. These pieces blend outdoor learning, imagination, and the restorative calm of the forest.

The stumps represent stories, whether from literature or the artist's own adventures, that include a blend of nature and the flora of our province. Viewers are encouraged to envision and experience nature in a novel way.

Art pieces may be impressionistic, realistic, abstract, textile, mixed media, paint- basically any media that allowed the artist to tell their story and vision of the world of plants, and the artistic inspiration found in nature.

This exhibit will run from July 11 until Sept 30 and is included in your admission. This is a self guided art exhibit, placed on the trails, that is supplemented by scanning a QR code found at each of the 4 Story Stops for more information about the art and artists.

THE MIGHT ORGAMITES HAVE ARRIVED AT THE FLUVARIUM!

Get ready for an interactive adventure that will have kids (and adults!) exploring the incredible systems that keep our bodies alive.
Join us at The Fluvarium for The Mighty Orgamites, a hands-on travelling exhibit that takes visitors on an exciting journey through the human body. Discover how your heart pumps, your lungs breathe, your kidneys filter, and how organ donation can change lives.

Perfect for families, children, school-aged explorers, and anyone who loves science, this exhibit combines fun, learning, and interactive activities that will leave you amazed by what happens inside your body every day.

BIRD WATCHING: Sunday, September 13, 8:00 am
MUN Botanical Garden, 306 Mount Scio Road

SUNDAY MORNING BIRD WALKS

Take a guided walk on the Garden's nature trails with a Friend of the Garden volunteer and learn about Newfoundland birds.
Binoculars are recommended, appropriate footwear is essential. No pre-registration necessary. This is a free event.

Please meet in the parking lot across the road from the main gate. The group leaves promptly on time, 8:00 am sharp, so please be there a few minutes early. Walks usually last 1.5 - 2 hours.
Newcomers are welcome.

This program is offered by volunteers. You can check if the program is going ahead by calling the Garden the day before the program at 709-864-8590 (between 10:00am-4:00pm). There is no fee to go on this guided walk.

For 2026, Guided Walks will run September 13, 27; October 11, 25

These walks are intended for individuals and small family groups. Larger groups should contact the Garden to make special arrangements.

DON'T TELL THE NEWFOUNDLANDERS

The true story, drawn from official documents and hours of personal interviews, of how Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation and became Canada's tenth province in 1949. A rich cast of characters—hailing from Britain, America, Canada and Newfoundland—battle it out for the prize of the resource-rich, financially solvent, militarily strategic island. The twists and turns are as dramatic as any spy novel and extremely surprising, since the "official" version of Newfoundland history has held for over fifty years almost without question. Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders will change all that. Join us for this film screening following a Q&A with actor Greg Malone.

PICKLE PALOOZA!

A celebration of pickles, preserving, and Newfoundland & Labrador’s long history of putting up the harvest put on by the O'Brien Farm Foundation and our friends at the Avalon Food Hub!

Join us at O’Brien Farm on September 12th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for a day celebrating all things pickled, fermented, jammed, and jellied!

Admission is just $5 per person. All proceeds are a fundraiser for O'Brien Farm.

There’ll be a farmers’ market, artisan vendors, lots of delicious food for sale (street corn, churros, and more), a pickle-themed art auction, old-fashioned games, beer and cider, live music by Andrea Munro and Kate McCann, and, of course, our pickle-off.

THE PICKLE-OFF
Restaurants and licensed caterers are invited to submit four jars of pickles across four categories:

Ferments
Pickled Veggies
Jams & Jellies
Mustard Pickles

One jar from each entry will go to our panel of pickle judges: Todd Perrin, Sarah Stoodley, and pickle civilian/enthusiast Richie Perez!
The other three jars will be available for people to sample alongside hot dogs, and everyone can cast a vote for the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Come out to the farm and celebrate the mighty pickle with us!

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is proud to host the 2026 F.W. Angel Lecture, featuring Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka, President, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka is President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, one of the world’s leading applied research organizations. Fraunhofer plays a unique role in Germany’s innovation ecosystem, turning research into practical solutions with real-world impact.

The topic of this year’s lecture is “Building for Innovation: Lessons from the Fraunhofer Model on Bridging Applied Research and Industry.”

The event will be followed by a catered reception. Parking is available in lots 17 and 1A.
