Dedicated members of the public service support programs and deliver services that affect our everyday lives, all while keeping our communities safer. To all members of the public service, thank you for everything you continue to do for the people of our province and of our country.

While in Ottawa this week, Their Honours visited the Directorate of History and Heritage of the Department of National Defence. There they presented Dr. Sarah Lockyer, Casualty Identification Coordinator, with a commemorative forget-me-not from Morgan MacDonald.

Dr. Sarah Lockyer and an incredible team were responsible for the research and selection of the fallen hero who would be honoured as our Unknown Soldier. Their compassion and meticulous personal care of our Unknown Soldier were at the heart of every aspect of his repatriation and interment in 2024.

While at the Directorate, Their Honours learned more about the work of the office and viewed original badges and colours.

You can read more about DND’s Directorate of History and Heritage and access archival records at https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/military-history/history-heritage.html

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are relatives of soldiers with no known grave from the First and Second World Wars and beyond can register to help identify unknown remains:

On this day in 1944, a critical turning point in history occurred. Much of Europe had been under occupation for some time as the Second World War continued.

A bold plan to begin the liberation of those European countries was about to unfold. With great secrecy and with great hope, the largest seaborne invasion in history began, and the Allies came ashore at Normandy, surprising the occupying force.

Among that historic invasion force were 14,000 Canadians who landed at Juno Beach. At sea, The Royal Canadian Navy contributed 109 vessels and 10,000 sailors to the operation. Overhead, The Royal Canadian Air Force flew, helping to protect those below.

Tonight, Government House will light up in the colours of the flag of Canada to honour and remember all those who fought on D-Day, whether on land, at sea, or in the air
