Inspired by the historic repatriation of Newfoundland’s Unknown Soldier, Private Dawe set out to honour that legacy through service. Follow his journey through the high-stress drills, late-night camaraderie, and physical trials of Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) as he keeps that initial spark alive all the way to earning Top Candidate!

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band was honoured to take part in the unveiling ceremony for the new war memorial in Freshwater on August 9th.

Erected in grateful remembrance of all those who served in past conflicts and in memory of those who gave their lives, this monument will be a gathering place for the local community to join in acts of remembrance.

La Musique du Royal Newfoundland Regiment a eu l’honneur de participer à la cérémonie de dévoilement du nouveau monument commémoratif de guerre à Freshwater, le 9 août.

Érigé en hommage reconnaissant à toutes celles et tous ceux qui ont servi lors des conflits passés, et à la mémoire de celles et ceux qui ont donné leur vie, ce monument sera un lieu de rassemblement où la communauté locale pourra se réunir pour poser des gestes de commémoration.

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment wishes Gemma Gillard a very happy retirement after 36 years of outstanding service and dedication as a member of the Defence Team!

Lieutenant-Colonel Strong presented Gemma with a certificate of appreciation at her retirement celebration.

"The 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, extends heartfelt and sincere gratitude and appreciation for your remarkable contributions and tireless support of Regimental members and our Regiment as a whole. Your service has strengthened our Regimental community and enriched the lives of all who have had the privilege to know your service."

Thank you for 36 years of dedicated service, Gemma. Your contributions to the Regiment and its members will be remembered and deeply appreciated.

One month from today!

On September 17th at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John's, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band will be taking the stage with The Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy.

If you aren't located in St. John's, you don't have to worry about missing out. For the first time in over a decade, The Stadacona Band will be travelling across the island, performing in Gander and Corner Brook!

This free concert series is sure to have something for everyone; consider coming out to support The Stadacona Band on tour and to support The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band in St. John's.

On the final full day for our members on Operation DISTINCTION, a tour to the Canadian National Vimy Memorial was put on.

While there was no formal remembrance ceremony at Vimy Ridge, it was an incredible opportunity to be immersed in the history of Canada's war effort.

"Walking through the torn-up land and seeing the ground they had to take, the challenges faced by the Canadians really hit me. I found that standing up on the ridge and being able to see across the countryside helped me to actually understand the history rather than just knowing the facts."

Lors de la dernière journée complète de nos militaires participant à l'opération DISTINCTION, une visite du Mémorial national du Canada à Vimy a été organisée.

Bien qu'aucune cérémonie officielle du Souvenir n'ait eu lieu à la crête de Vimy, cette visite a offert une occasion exceptionnelle de s'immerger dans l'histoire de l'effort de guerre du Canada.

« En parcourant ce terrain ravagé et en voyant le sol qu'ils ont dû conquérir, j'ai vraiment pris conscience des défis auxquels les Canadiens ont été confrontés. Le fait de me tenir au sommet de la crête et de pouvoir contempler la campagne environnante m'a permis de véritablement comprendre cette page d'histoire, plutôt que d'en connaître simplement les faits. »

While on Op DISTINCTION, the CAF contingent visited the caribou monuments at both Monchy-Le-Preux and Masnières to participate in ceremonies of remembrance.

Monchy-Le-Preux was particularly meaningful for multiple members of the band who had family who fought at the Battle of Monchy. One of those members was Cpl Kurtis Rodgers (third and fourth photos), a trombone player with the band, who on the last day in France visited his family member's grave.

"It was particularly special for me to visit my ancestor's grave, Pte Thomas Rodgers, who fought and died at Monchy. To be the first family member to visit since 1917, and to have his war medals and present them posthumously to him was truly a great honour that I will always cherish." -Cpl Kurtis Rodgers

Alors qu’il participait à l’opération DISTINCTION, le contingent des FAC a visité les monuments commémoratifs du caribou à Monchy-le-Preux et à Masnières afin de prendre part à des cérémonies du souvenir.

Monchy-le-Preux revêtait une signification particulière pour plusieurs membres de la Musique, dont des membres de la famille avaient combattu lors de la bataille de Monchy. L’un de ces membres était le Cpl Kurtis Rodgers (troisième et quatrième photos), tromboniste au sein de la Musique, qui, lors de sa dernière journée en France, a visité la tombe de son ancêtre.

As part of the professional development built into Op DISTINCTION, the CAF contingent was given a tour of the Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park by the exceptional Canadian student guides.

"As a Newfoundlander, we all learned about the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel in school. Being at the site helped put into perspective the struggle the regiment faced. It was a very powerful experience, and I am honoured to have been a part of it."

This was the first time at Beaumont Hamel for many, but the impact is still felt no matter how many times you visit.

Dans le cadre du perfectionnement professionnel intégré à l’opération DISTINCTION, le contingent des FAC a eu l’occasion de visiter le parc commémoratif de Beaumont-Hamel, guidé par les remarquables étudiants-guides canadiens.

« En tant que Terre-Neuvien, j’ai appris l’histoire de la bataille de Beaumont-Hamel à l’école. Le fait d’être sur les lieux m’a permis de mieux comprendre les
épreuves auxquelles le régiment a été confronté. Ce fut une expérience très marquante, et je suis honoré d’y avoir pris part. »

Pour plusieurs membres du contingent, il s’agissait d’une première visite à Beaumont-Hamel. Toutefois, peu importe le nombre de fois qu’on s’y rend, l’impact de cet endroit demeure profondément ressenti.

The first ceremony as part of Op DISTINCTION was the dedication of the new danger tree memorial.

The monument, which was created at Memorial University, was officially unveiled in its permanent location at Beaumont-Hamel, where the original Danger Tree once stood. After the dedication, the CAF contingent moved to the Y Ravine cemetery to support the placing of flowers on the graves, which include many Newfoundland soldiers.

Pte Luke Chiasson (first photo), a saxophone player with the Regimental Band, said this about the experience: "I am honoured to have performed as a part of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band for the Danger Tree Unveiling at Beaumont-Hamel. To see such a significant part of our history in-person was a deeply moving experience that I will always remember."

La première cérémonie dans le cadre de l’opération DISTINCTION a été la cérémonie de dédicace du nouveau monument commémoratif de l’Arbre du danger.

Le monument, conçu à la Memorial University, a été officiellement dévoilé à son emplacement permanent à Beaumont-Hamel, là où se trouvait autrefois l’Arbre du danger original. À la suite de la cérémonie, le contingent des FAC s’est rendu au cimetière Y Ravine afin d’appuyer le dépôt de fleurs sur les tombes, dont plusieurs appartiennent à des soldats de Terre-Neuve.

Le soldat Luke Chiasson (première photo), saxophoniste au sein de la Musique régimentaire, a partagé ses impressions sur cette expérience :

Voir en personne un lieu aussi important de notre histoire a été une expérience profondément émouvante dont je me souviendrai toujours. »

On July 1st, members of 37 Canadian Brigade Group from The Royal Newfoundland Regiment along with members from 5 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group and units across Canada stood on historic, sacred ground in France to mark the 110th Anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel and the Somme.

For the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, this pilgrimage carries a profound, deeply personal weight—honouring the soldiers of their own lineage who braved devastating machine gun fire at great cost at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916.

Alongside soldiers, sailors, and aviators from across the Canadian Armed Forces, our local members stood in remembrance, each carrying their own story and connection to the legacy of the First World War.

Le 1er juillet, des membres du 37e Groupe-brigade du Canada du Royal Newfoundland Regiment, aux côtés de membres du 5e Groupe de patrouilles des Rangers canadiens et d'unités de partout au Canada, se sont recueillis sur la terre historique et sacrée de France pour marquer le 110e anniversaire de Beaumont-Hamel et de la Somme.

Pour le Royal Newfoundland Regiment, ce pèlerinage revêt une importance profonde et personnelle — honorant les soldats de leur propre lignée qui ont bravé les tirs de mitrailleuses dévastateurs, au prix de grands sacrifices, à Beaumont-Hamel le 1er juillet 1916.

The Regimental band, along with Capt Besso and MCpl Dawe, have returned from Operation DISTINCTION in France, supporting commemoration events for the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel as well as other ceremonies related to Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador's contributions to WWI.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more photos and stories from the trip.
