A winter storm is on the way, bringing significant snowfall across parts of the island.

Eastern Avalon Peninsula could see 15-20 cm of snow.

Western Avalon Peninsula may receive anywhere from 10-15 cm, with amounts gradually decreasing further west.

There is still some uncertainty in the storm’s track. If it shifts east, snowfall totals could be lower. A shift west, however, would mean higher amounts.

Stay tuned for updates as the system approaches!

Here's what to expect:

Snow and blowing snow tonight and overnight across the island. 10-20 cm for the western half of the island. 10-15 for the eastern half of the island and will mix with/change to ice pellets in the morning for the Burin and Avalon peninsulas and then end as flurries or drizzle by noon. You might see some ice pellets in the mix for the south coast as well.

Strong northwesterly winds will develop tomorrow afternoon/evening with snow or flurries for the west so blowing snow is expected right through Saturday, snow accumulations will be upwards of 40+ cm by the time we get to Sunday morning. Windy with flurries for the rest of the island, so expect local blowing snow.

Snow spreads across Labrador tonight with gusty winds along the strait but the winds don’t pick up until tomorrow night through Saturday for the rest of the Labrador Coast. Snowfall amounts through Saturday morning will be between 20-30 cm for the coast, upwards of 10-20 cm around Happy Valley-Goose Bay and then 5-10 cm for Lab West.

The Avalon Peninsula is being slammed with it's first blizzard of the new year, shuttering schools across the region and grounding some flights.

Environment Canada has a blizzard warning in effect for the St. John's metro, with a blowing snow advisory for Bonavista North and Terra Nova.

"Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations," it said.

The storm also caused closures and delays in the region.

Across the Avalon, NL Schools announced all schools were closed for the day and St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's and École Rocher-du-Nord also announced ithey would not open.

In central, Christ the King School in Rushoon and Fortune Bay Academy in St. Bernard's-Jacques Fontaine also closed due to weather conditions, with updates expected in the morning.

MetrobBus and GoBus announced its fleet would not be on St. John's streets Monday morning and an update would come around noon.

The storm is also impacting the St. John's International Airport, with several flights either cancelled or delayed.

The snow started Sunday night around 8:00 p.m., with snowfall amounts on the Avalon between 20 to 35+ cm. It is expected to taper to flurries starting Monday morning into the afternoon.

Snowfall will amount to 10 to 20 cm for the rest of eastern region of the island.

Winds and heavy snow created blizzard conditions with near-zero viability, though this should improve once the snow tapers to flurries in the morning.
