The cost of living has risen nearly 20% in the last five years — and in small communities like Pemberton, families feel it even more. With fewer grocery options, higher transportation costs, and supply chain challenges, the basics are harder to afford.

As Outreach Program Manager Leda North shares, “food insecurity has risen as the cost of food and housing has increased disproportionately to the average wage.”

Every week, the Pemberton Food Bank helps stock the community fridge at Signal Hill Elementary with snacks and meals — ensuring students have food they can count on throughout the school day.

And when school closes for summer, programs like Food Banks Canada's After the Bell (operated by the Pemberton Food Bank locally) provide nutritious snack packs so families don’t lose access to the supports they rely on during the year.
