A Time of Harvest: Early farming in Spruce Grove and District!

It’s harvest season for farmers, a busy time of gathering crops and preparing them for storage and sale. As today’s farmers work in the fields, we’re looking back at what harvest season was like for Spruce Grove’s early homesteaders.

These photographs from the early 1900s show different stages of the harvest, including cutting crops, building haystacks, and threshing wheat, barley, and oats. Much of the work was done by hand, with the help of horses and early farm machinery. Once the grain was threshed and prepared, it was transported to the local grain elevator. Harvesting required long days and the combined efforts of families and neighbours. Once the grain was threshed and prepared, it was transported to the local grain elevator.

Do you have family stories or photographs of harvesting and delivering grain to the elevator? Share your memories with us!

Would you like to learn more about how harvested grain was received, stored, and transported? Stop by the historic grain elevator for a tour!

By the way, some people asked why some of the red tickets were shaped differently and why some were blue. We had such a great response that we ran out of the original tickets and had to rush out to buy more! Be assured, they were all entered into the draw!
