🚒💜 Springhill Firehouse Fighters – Relay for Life 2026 💜🚒

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the Springhill Firehouse Fighters will be coming together to participate in the Relay for Life to support those impacted by cancer.

Cancer is a battle we see far too often. As firefighters, the risks go beyond the fireground — studies have shown firefighters face a significantly higher risk of developing certain types of cancer due to repeated exposure to smoke, toxins, and hazardous materials. It’s a reality of the job, and it’s one of the reasons this cause hits so close to home.

This year, our members won’t just be walking — they’ll be walking in full gear to represent the weight of that risk, and to stand in solidarity with every person carrying the burden of this disease.

💪 Now we’re asking for your support.

You can make a difference by:
👉 Sponsoring the Springhill Firehouse Fighters team
👉 Supporting one of our firefighters in the relay
👉 Sharing this post to help spread the word

Every dollar raised helps fund critical cancer research and provides support to patients and families who need it most.

We’ll carry the gear — together, we can help carry the fight.

From our fire family to yours, thank you for standing with us. 💜🚒

Today, on First Responders Day, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank every one of our Springhill Fire Department members.

“Hero” is a word you’ll rarely hear used—but it’s one that truly reflects the work being done every day. The selfless dedication, the willingness to answer the call at any hour, and the commitment to protecting this community do not go unnoticed. It goes far beyond what words like “thank you” can fully capture.

We are also proud to stand alongside the many first responders we work with every day:

🚒 Firefighters from neighbouring departments — our mutual aid partners who stand with us when seconds matter, confronting danger and, at times, loss with courage and resilience.
🚓 Police Officers — who face uncertainty head-on to keep our communities safe.
🚑 Paramedics & EHS Staff — who provide critical care when every second matters most.
🛑 Correctional Officers — who maintain safety and order in challenging and often unseen environments.
📞 Dispatchers — the calm, steady voices behind the scenes, often the very first step in getting people the help they need.

Each of you plays a vital role. Each of you makes a difference. And together, you form the backbone of emergency response in our community.

Today, and every day, we thank you.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost in the Portapique tragedy. Our hearts remain with the families, friends, and communities forever changed by that day.

As firefighters, neighbors, and Nova Scotians, we stand together in remembrance. Their memory lives on in the strength, compassion, and resilience we continue to show one another.

Alanna and Sean, we miss you and love you.

We will never forget.

Nova Scotia Strong. ❤️

We join our community in mourning as another has gained their wings.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Faron Young. He was a familiar, smiling face who was always there to support us—whether at community events or handing out muffins during long calls. His kindness and generosity never went unnoticed, and his presence will be truly missed.

Rest easy, kind sir. Your support meant more than words can express. 🕊️

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a man who was so much to so many, our wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Faron Kevin Young, who died in Springhill, Nova Scotia on April 9, 2026.

Faron was born in St. George’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on December 30, 1955 to Ivan and Alice (nee Smith) Young. He was the eldest of six and loved to remind his siblings that he was their mother’s favourite.

He grew up in both Newfoundland and Schefferville, Quebec, where he met his best friend and future wife Joyce (nee Weatherbee), winning her over with his charm, kindness and sense of humour. Upon the closure of the mines in Schefferville, Faron joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became an aeroengine technician, where he was a proud member of several search and rescue squadrons. Faron and Joyce got married in Halifax in 1980, eventually moving to Summerside, PEI where they had two daughters, Megan and Allison (Refugia).

It was in Summerside that Faron discovered his love of wood carving, a passion that he pursued for the rest of his life. He taught and supported beginner wood carvers in multiple provinces, and his legacy will live on through the art that has found itself in thousands of homes across Canada and the world.

Faron was posted to Trenton, Ontario, and Comox, British Columbia, prior to retiring from the air force. The Young family relocated to Belleville, Ontario, until they purchased a home in Joyce’s hometown of Springhill, Nova Scotia in 2006.

Faron’s years in Springhill were marked by his strong community involvement, most notably as a Legion Service Officer and as President of the Cobequid Off Highway Vehicle Club, his patronage of local restaurants, and the open door policy at his carving workshop located on McGee Street. He was also able to travel to Newfoundland frequently, visiting family and leading several ATV trips.

In his later years, Faron took on the most important role of his life, as the "best Poppie ever" to his grandson, Kohen. He introduced Kohen to his love of airplanes, the joy of a good car wash, ATVs, Newfoundland, and, most critically, Cheezies.

Faron was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Alice Young, his in-laws Buster and Ethelyn Weatherbee, his sister Beverly, his brother Glenn, and his nephew, Ty. In addition to his wife, children, son-in-law Michael and grandson, he is survived by his sisters Barbara, Karen (Bertrand) McGraw and Lisa (Brian) Lucas. He also leaves his sisters-in-law Mary Lou (Jeff) Griswold and BJ (John) McIntosh, and brothers-in-law Bill (Ronda) Weatherbee and Denis Racine, his aunt Magdalen, many nieces and nephews, and a plethora of cousins and extended family.

The family extends its thanks and appreciation to the palliative care teams in both Springhill and Amherst, as well as the second floor staff of the All Saints Hospital in Springhill who were tireless in their delivery of compassionate, empathetic care for both Faron and those who supported him.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361). An Afternoon of Remembrace will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 from 1-3 pm with a time of special words of remembrance to be shared at 2 pm.

If so desired, those wishing to make donations in Faron's memory may do so to Springhill Food Bank; GOVRC; Donor's Choice

Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Faron's online memorial at www.brownsfuneralhome.com or through the A H Brown Funeral Service page.

It is with profound sadness that the Springhill Fire Department announces the passing of our dear friend, Michael Edward Kaye, age 69, of Springhill. Mike passed away peacefully at High Crest Nursing Home on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Mike was a constant and valued presence around the fire hall. He gave countless hours of his time supporting the department, especially through selling raffle tickets and helping wherever he was needed. In later years, you could always find Mike sitting by the bay door, greeting everyone with a smile as he sold ice or collected toonies for the weekly draw. As our “official number picker,” he took great pride in keeping the toonie draw running like a well-oiled machine.

The number of kilometers Mike walked over the years selling tickets is something we may never know—but what we do know is the immeasurable impact he had on all of us. He truly embodied the spirit of a firefighter. He cared deeply for the department, its members, and the community as a whole. Mike wasn’t just a supporter—he was family.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially his Fire Fighting Family. We all miss Mike more than words can express.

As a mark of respect and remembrance, the flags at the Springhill Fire Department will remain at half mast until after his celebration of life.

Arrangements have been entrusted to A.H. Brown Funeral Service, Springhill. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at the Springhill Fire Hall on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Burial will take place at a later date.

If desired, donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the Springhill Fire Department.

Rest easy, Mike. Your dedication, your kindness, and your spirit will never be forgotten.

March 17 training at Springhill Fire Department 🚒

Firefighting is an inherently dangerous, and conditions can change rapidly. That’s why training like this is so important.

Under the direction of Captain MacDonald, members took part in a challenging evolution designed to simulate disorientation, confined spaces, and entanglement — all hazards firefighters can face on the fireground.

Crews began in the dark, working to untangle their packs before advancing through the gauntlet. From there, firefighters were required to navigate an 18-inch culvert pipe while remaining on air, removing equipment as needed to make it through — and yes, some of us had to wiggle a little more than others to get through 😅

The evolution finished with a complex “rat’s nest” of ropes, testing problem-solving, composure, and teamwork under pressure.

Training like this reinforces critical skills: staying calm, managing air, adapting to tight spaces, and finding a way out when conditions are at their worst. It ensures our members are prepared to protect both the public and each other when it matters most.
