Post Secondary School Fire Safety Part 5

When the smoke alarm sounds, everyone must know what to do and where to go. Encourage students to develop a fire escape plan, keeping the following in mind:

◼Know two ways out of every room, if possible.
◼Make sure all windows open easily.
◼Know where the stairs are located, not just the elevator
◼Leave the building as quickly as possible.
◼Once outside, do not re-enter the building for any reason.
◼Call 9-1-1 from outside the building using a cell phone

Post Secondary Fire Safety Part 4
Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless and tasteless gas.

◼If you home, student accommodation or rental has a fuel burning appliance or an attached garage, the laws states that a CO alarm must be installed on every level and outside of all sleeping areas.
◼Landlords must ensure CO alarms are installed and maintained in rental properties.
◼Your CO alarm sounds different than your smoke alarm. Know the difference

Post Secondary School Fire Safety Part 3

If a fire does occur, it is critical that the dwelling have working smoke alarms to alert occupants as soon as possible.

It is the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. The law applies to single family, semi-detached, town homes and apartments (including basement apartments), whether owner-occupied or rented.

Reminder that it is against the law for tenants to disable or tamper with a smoke alarm.

Post Secondary School Safety Part 2:
Parties are as much a part of student life as attending classes. While most student parties are harmless fun, the consumption of alcohol combined with cooking or smoking can create a serious fire risk. To minimize the risk of fires during or after parties:

◼Avoid over-crowding.
◼ Don't cook after drinking. Order out
◼Remind guests to only smoke outside.
◼Know two ways out of every room.
◼Make sure all designated escape routes are accessible and free of clutter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Structure Fire at a Commercial Property on County Road 18

On August 17, 2026, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Augusta Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a commercial property on County Road 18.

The Prescott Fire Department also responded under an existing Fire Service Agreement, while the Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Fire Department responded under a reciprocal automatic aid tanker agreement.

The first fire apparatus arrived on scene at approximately 2:05 p.m. Firefighters encountered a multi-unit storage facility with heavy smoke visible from the building.

Fire crews quickly brought the fire under control and prevented further spread. However, multiple storage units sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

A total of 33 firefighters and 12 fire apparatus from the three fire departments responded to the incident.

There were no injuries to firefighters or members of the public.

Due to the extent of the damage within the unit where the fire originated, the cause of the fire could not be determined.

Augusta Fire Rescue thanks the Prescott Fire Department and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Fire Department for their assistance and continued cooperation.
