Important perennial reminder (shared on from former Sooke School District trustee Margot Swinburnson) + tips from the District of Sooke "The return to school means busier roads, sidewalks and neighbourhoods, particularly during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Whether driving, walking, cycling, or rolling, everyone is encouraged to allow a little extra time, be patient, and watch carefully for one another." 😍https://www.sooke.ca/news-and-public-notices/posts/back-to-school-a-safe-start-to-the-school-year/

Tuesday STEAM stations
Tuesday was a special STEAM station day focused on food literacy. We learned about the sun and how it supports our growth and the growth of the plants we eat to nourish our bodies. We activated prior knowledge before reading Sun in my Tummy. We made connections to the foods we like to eat, how they grow, and how they nourish us. We then got to make our own food! We had four different stations where we learned how to measure, mix, and how different plants grow to be used as food. We also learned how to describe food we like and don’t like using descriptive words that can express our feelings in a kind and positive way.
Food stations:
- tzatziki and pita
- ranch dip
- fruit dip
- parfaits

Wednesday Field Trip - Our field trip to the Malahat Skywalk was a success! The kids were so curious about everything the Skywalk had to offer. The walk to the Skywalk was full of observations, questions, and discussions. The campers bravely tested out the Adventure Net and enjoyed taking in the sights from above. Some campers tried the fast, spiral slide, testing their lung capacity while they went down. Others chose to take the scenic route back down making note of all the different birds of prey soaring at eye level. Campers had fun on the playground structure while others chose to walk back up the Skywalk to go for another ride down the spiral slide. The Skywalk had an art station set up and some of the campers opted to complete art. A great option for those who did not want to go down the slide again. On our way back to the bus we took “Luke’s Trail” where we went on a nature walk through a beautiful forest and completed a scavenger hunt looking for local plants and animals. We even found a forest slide! The day was full of fun and adventure!

Thursday - We had a “fun day” on Thursday afternoon where the kids got to play with water guns. An extra special treat was Brooke bringing a bouncy castle for us jump and play on!

Friday – Late Thursday afternoon we learned the Seaparc pool was going to be closed on Friday! Luckily, Mr. Pugh was able to find a quick alternative for us and booked a bus to take us to the Juan de Fuca pool. We had a blast!
Working with Ms. Fred and Ms. Bueckert to review our learning goals and note improvements since the beginning of camp.
The campers of the week this week were Emily, Isha, Zavier, Skyler, Orson, Emerson, Louisa, and Annika.

This week! Come drop off your empties at Sooke Elementary and help support our youth engagement program Youth For Sooke. Last time we hosted a bottle drive the proceeds went to the EMCS dance and before that to purchase a movie license. Youth collect the funds and determine how they will be spent.

Got any empties from the long weekend? We would love to have them! Help us fundraise for future youth friendly events by dropping off your cans and bottles this Thursday, August 6 between 10am-2pm at Sooke elementary school.
