SC’IȺNEW̱’s partnership with KOTUG is helping create economic opportunities while continuing to prioritize marine safety and stewardship of the Sea. ⚓🤝🏾🌿
KOTUG partnered with SC’IȺNEW̱ in 2023 to support the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, focusing on collaboration and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.
Through the partnership:
⏱️ Oil spill response times were reduced from 72 hours to 6 hours
🌊 Community members received marine safety and industrial diver training
📈 New employment and funding opportunities were created
🛶 KOTUG supported Tribal Journeys 2025 and established an office on site
“We wanted to be out there first… the only way to do that was to participate as an equal partner.” - Chief Chipps

SC’IȺNEW̱ (pronounced CHEA-nuh) comes from the KLALLAM language and means “the place of the big fish.” 🐟

As with other First Nation names in the region, the place name SC’IȺNEW̱ identifies what the inhabitants need to know about the locale. Our name reflects the abundance of sea life that sustains SC’IȺNEW̱ and neighbouring First Nation communities with food, shelter, medicine, and clothing. 🌊
