Another busy Sunday afternoon for Sooke Fire Fighters as crews responded to yet another structure fire in our community. Engine 1 arrived on scene within minutes of receiving the call and quickly initiated fire attack operations. Engine 12 and Ladder 1 also responded with additional off-duty career and Paid on Call personnel to support firefighting efforts and help bring the incident under control.

We also want to extend our sincere thanks to our mutual aid partners from East Sooke, Metchosin, and Otter Point, along with support from RCMP, Sooke ESS, and the BC Ambulance Service. Incidents like this reinforce the importance of teamwork and the value of strong partnerships when our community needs them most.

This was a highly visible incident for many residents and comes as the latest in a flurry of structure fires our crews have attended since Easter. The volume and complexity of these incidents continue to keep our members busy and highlight the dedication and professionalism of all those responding, day and night.

This fire extended into standing trees before crews were able to intervene. As we move further into warmer and drier conditions, this is an important reminder that wildfire season is approaching. Keep grass and vegetation maintained around your home, properly dispose of smoking materials, use caution with outdoor equipment and open flames, and stay aware of conditions around you. Small fires can spread quickly when fuels and weather conditions align.

Thank you to the community for your support, patience around emergency scenes, and for continuing to stay vigilant.

A big congratulations to firefighter Carsen Holmquist on the completion of his 1-year probation! Carsen has worked hard to master the skills and expectations of a probationary firefighter and has become a valuable member of the team - his B Shift team, and the whole department, looks forward to his continued growth and contributions.

Another early morning fire response for members of IAFF Local 4841. Crews were called out before sunrise and worked quickly to bring the incident under control and protect nearby homes and property.

We encourage everyone in the community to stay safe, stay alert, and remain vigilant. Small issues can become serious emergencies quickly, and looking out for one another makes a difference.

Thank you to all responding crews for another strong team effort serving our community.

This week alone, Sooke Fire Fighters have responded to three separate structure fires. These incidents are a strong reminder of how quickly fire can spread, and how important it is to be prepared before an emergency happens.

Take a few minutes today to:
🚨 Test your smoke alarms
🏠 Practice a home escape plan with your family
👨‍👩‍👧 Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room
📍 Choose a safe meeting place outside

Working smoke alarms save lives, and practicing your escape plan can make all the difference when seconds count.

Stay safe, Sooke.

April kept our crews moving.

Several complex calls and challenging incidents tested every part of our training. It was a month that reminded us why achieving proper staffing and preparation matters. Every call we respond to is backed by hours of training, teamwork, and a commitment to showing up when our community needs us most.

Behind the scenes, our members have also been putting in the work to get ready for what’s ahead. With wildfire season approaching here in Sooke, crews are sharpening skills, reviewing tactics, and training in wildfire response to ensure we’re ready to protect our community and surrounding areas.

As we head into warmer, drier months, we’re asking everyone to do their part:

• Follow all local fire bans and restrictions
• Dispose of ci******es safely and never toss them from vehicles
• Keep yards clear of dry brush and debris
• Make a plan and have an emergency kit ready

When seconds matter, training makes the difference.

This week, Sooke Fire Fighters got hands-on with auto extrication training - cutting, spreading, lifting, and stabilizing vehicles in realistic scenarios. These aren’t just drills… they’re the skills that save lives when someone is trapped and needs help fast.

A big thank you to Rob at Sooke Auto Recycling for providing the vehicles and prepping them for each exercise.

When schools are quiet, our firefighters take the opportunity to train at these locations. This weekend, crews were using Ladder 1 and practicing positioning, access, and rescue scenarios in real-world environments. These sessions help ensure we’re ready to respond when it matters most.

If you see us out at your local school and all looks calm, it’s all part of staying prepared for our community.
