🔥 CAMPFIRE PROHIBITION LIFTED – OTTER POINT 🔥

After reviewing local fire weather station data showing a reduced fire danger rating for two consecutive days, along with cooler temperatures and damp mornings providing good overnight recovery, the campfire prohibition within the Otter Point Fire Protection District is lifted effective immediately, Friday, September 4, 2026.

Residents are reminded that a legal campfire must be smaller than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide and must comply with all CRD burning regulations. Campfires must be continuously attended, with adequate water and a hand tool readily available. Please ensure your fire is completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving it.

This change applies to campfires only. Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited.

Thank you to everyone for your patience, cooperation and understanding throughout the prohibition. For those who may have found the restrictions frustrating, we hope you understand that these decisions are always made with the safety and protection of you, your property and the entire Otter Point community in mind.

🚒 NOW RECRUITING: 2026–27 VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT CLASS

Are you ready to serve your community, build lasting friendships, and learn valuable emergency-response skills?

The Otter Point Volunteer Fire Department is accepting applications for our 2026–27 recruit class.

📅 Important Dates
• Applications open: August 26, 2026
• Application deadline: September 20, 2026
• Recruit assessment day: October 3, 2026
• Recruit training begins: October or November 2026 — exact date to be determined

No previous firefighting experience is required. We provide the training, support and practical experience you need, including firefighting, medical first response, vehicle rescue, wildland firefighting, driver and pump operations, and more.
Applicants must live within a 10-minute response to the Otter Point Fire Hall, hold a valid BC driver’s licence and be at least 19 years old when recruit training begins.

Off-road vehicle prohibition for parts of Coastal Fire Centre
August 10, 2026

PARKSVILLE – Effective immediately, Monday, August 10, 2026, off-road vehicles (ORV) will be prohibited on Crown Land in the Coastal Fire Centre with exceptions North Island/Mid Coast, Mid Island and Sunshine Coast.

Exceptions include that off-road vehicles (ORV) remain permitted in:

portions of the South Island Forest District including Regional District of Nanaimo and Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot
North Island Central Coast Forest District
Campbell River Forest District
Sunshine Coast Forest District
Haida Gwaii Forest District
Given the scope and scale of fires currently burning in B.C., and the elevated danger ratings in many southern regions of the province, this prohibition is being put into place to further protect public safety.

As of Monday, August 10, 2026, the operation of any off-road vehicle for recreational purposes on Crown land will be prohibited and all on-highway vehicles must remain on road surfaces as defined in the Forest Planning and Practices Regulation.

The prohibition applies to off-road vehicles as defined in the Off-Road Vehicle Act and section 2 (a) of the Off-Road Vehicle Regulation:

all-terrain vehicles
motorcycles
off road side-by-side vehicles
This prohibitions does not apply to private lands or national parks. It also does not apply to emergency response, agriculture or commercial / industrial users who operate off road vehicles for farming or business purposes.

The ORV prohibition also does not apply to individuals who are customers of and remain in the presence of a commercial/industrial user operating an ORV for business purposes.
