Here are some tips for drivers when school starts:

• SLOW DOWN – obey all posted school zone speed limits and watch for signals from crossing guards

• Stop for school buses – NEVER pass a school bus from any direction when its red lights flash and the stop arm is out. Stay at least 10 feet back to give children space to cross the road.

• Eliminate distractions – Put your phone away and keep your full attention on the road, especially in residential areas and drop-off loops.

• Plan ahead – Leave earlier in the morning to account for heavier traffic and delays near schools.

• Use designated zones – always drop off and pick up children in official school zones, avoiding dangerous U-turns or double parking.

Here are some tips for students who are walking or biking to school this year:

• Put devices away – Remove earbuds and put phones in your pocket so you can hear and see oncoming traffic.

• Use Crosswalks – Cross only at marked intersections or crosswalks, and always obey crossing guards

• Make eye contact – Look left, right and left again. Make sure drivers see you before stepping onto the road.

• Be bus smart – If you cross in front of the bus, stay far enough out so you can see the driver, and wait for their signal.

• Walk the route – Practice walking or biking the school route with your parents or older siblings beforehand to know where is safe to cross.

A big thank you to our friends at the Smiths Falls Fire Department for hosting a fun and informative training session focused on water safety and rescue. This was a great example of Smiths Falls emergency services working together to strengthen emergency preparedness and keep our community safe. Our officers greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from the knowledge and expertise of our Fire Service members. We’re proud to work alongside such dedicated professionals in serving the residents of Smiths Falls!

There have been some changes we have been made aware of in relation to school buses which will impact a significant amount of students and parents.

In an effort to help with the transition and safety concerns we are going to be more visible along school zones and routes students will be using to get to and from school.

🚒🚓 Upcoming Training Exercise
On September 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Smiths Falls Fire Department and Smiths Falls Police Service will be participating in a joint training exercise in Victoria Park.
Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and personnel from both organizations, with training activities taking place both in and around the water.

This is a scheduled training exercise. We appreciate your understanding as our emergency services work together to strengthen their skills and preparedness.💪
