Critics have hailed Ted and Marion Outerbridge as “the most successful magicians in Canada” and “champions of magic.”

We are at the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai.

We want to thank Vice Consul Dylan Lasek for the invitation to visit. Mysteries of the Keyhole House has been very well received here — blending history, storytelling, and illusion inspired by our Victorian home in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Performance ten. Huai’an Grand Theater. We arrived and got straight to work with the local crew. During setup, Jeffrey was rocking some gold fringe. Twelve hundred seats. A massive LED wall that travels on a stage truck to a storage position in the wings when not in use. This was not a small stage. By stop ten, we had the right apps to get around China — but we had yet to embrace the squat toilets. The House opened 30 minutes before showtime. We took our pre-show walk from our dressing room to backstage — and then Showtime. A keyhole appears on the curtain. A story begins. Magic for every age in the house.
Marion was in an especially good mood — and the audience felt it. Her brother Burkhard — had flown in from Jakarta with his son. She hadn’t seen them in two years. Thank you, Huai’an for an amazing evening!

The world’s largest high-speed rail network carried us to our ninth stop on our China tour. The Lianyungang Grand Theatre was already celebrating us before we even set foot on stage. A truckload of magic was waiting. The Dancing Handkerchief charmed the crowd… and Agnes made herself known in an old dollhouse and a spirit cabinet. Young fans, wide eyes, unforgettable moments. And we closed the night with a meal and our youngest team member. Nine down. Four to go.

Performance 8 of 13 on our China tour brought us to the beautiful Zhangjiagang Grand Theatre.

Marion spotted Mysteries of the Keyhole House on the marquee. We made our way inside and discovered that we were featured as the centrefold of the season brochure. Jeff and Eagle made friends with the house lighting board.

Alexander is a longtime resident of an old Victorian dolls house we found in the attic. During rehearsal he decided he wanted to play.
That night, Marion was tied up as she played the role of a Victorian spirit medium. She entered our spirit cabinet in an attempt to communicate with Agnes, the ghost of the Keyhole House.
Marion called across the veil.
Agnes answered.
And apparently Agnes… has a sense of humour.

Performance 7 of our 13-city China tour brought us to Changzhou — from the world’s tallest pagoda to the incredible 1,500-seat Changzhou Poly Grand Theatre. Another unforgettable audience for Mysteries of the Keyhole House. Thank you, Changzhou!

Stop six on our China tour brought us to the stunning Nanjing Poly Grand Theatre, designed by Zaha Hadid. 2,181 seats. A massive LED wall. And a show rooted in a 134-year-old house in Smiths Falls, Ontario. We let you in on a few secrets — and Alexander proved once again that he’s not very creepy at all.

Performance 5 of 13 on our China tour brought us to the incredible Suzhou Poly Grand Theatre.

Before the show, we spoke with the Suzhou Arts Festival about two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Suzhou’s ancient gardens and our own Rideau Canal back home in Smiths Falls.
During the interview, I shared a remarkable coincidence.

In the late 1800s, tea traveled from China to Smiths Falls, where it was stored and distributed by rail across North America.
Now, over a century later, something created in Smiths Falls has made the return journey.

Mysteries of the Keyhole House has come to China.

Thank you, Suzhou, for an unforgettable evening.

Every performance of Mysteries of the Keyhole House begins with a story about how, when we first arrived in Smiths Falls, a teenage boy held the door open for us at Tim Hortons with a smile. In that simple moment, it felt as though we were expected.

We fell in love with the warmth, hospitality, and spirit of this beautiful small town — and not long after, we bought the Keyhole House.

This month we are touring across China and we are reminded that the smallest acts of kindness can travel the world.

Eight years ago, we moved into an abandoned Victorian home in a town we’d never heard of. Smiths Falls, Ontario.

We are magicians. We wrote a show about it — the first magic show based on a slice of Canadian history.

Mysteries of the Keyhole House took us across the country, to the Caribbean, and now — to China.
We checked into our hotel in Taizhou, walked into the bathroom, and stopped cold.

Hanging on the wall: a piece of vintage map artwork. Ontario. And at the bottom — Smiths Falls.

Thousands of kilometres from home, and the house found us anyway.
The show must go on. Apparently, so must the magic.

We are in China.

World’s longest cable-stayed bridge. A thousand-seat theatre. A ghost who exits stage left. And a robot in the elevator.

Just another day on tour with Mysteries of the Keyhole House.
