📢 Election Signage
With the upcoming election, we’ve had some questions about when and where political signs can be placed in Smithers.
Political signs are currently permitted. The Town’s Sign Bylaw No. 1841 does not set a specific date when election signs can first be put up. Signs are permitted during federal, provincial and municipal election or referendum periods, subject to the applicable rules.
A few important things to keep in mind:
📍 Where signs can go:
Smaller political signs may be placed in grassed boulevards, as long as they do not create a safety concern or obstruct sightlines.
Signs cannot be placed in the centre medians of Highway 16 or Main Street, flower beds, formal landscaped areas, or other locations where they could create a safety concern.
Political signs are not permitted on Town-owned fee simple lands, including Town parks and properties containing municipal buildings or facilities, unless the property is leased at market value to a private interest.
📏 Larger signs:
Temporary signs larger than 1.5 m² (16 ft²) located within a road right-of-way, including boulevards or sidewalks, require a Highway Licence of Occupation and Town approval before installation.
🗳️ Voting places
Under the Local Government Act, election advertising, canvassing and other campaign activities, including signage, are prohibited within 100 metres of a voting place while voting proceedings are taking place. This restriction applies on voting days at the applicable voting locations.
🧹 After the election
All political signs must be removed within 7 days after the election day.
