Thinking about fireworks this Labour Day long weekend?

If you’re in the Forest Protection Area, you must have written permission from a Forest Officer before using fireworks; failing to obtain it can result in a $600 fine, and a site inspection is also required.

If a wildfire starts because of your fireworks, you may be held responsible for the full cost of firefighting. To keep things safe and straightforward, contact your local Forestry Office at least three days before the long weekend to arrange an inspection: Slave Lake at 780.849.7377 or Lac La Biche at 780.623.5388.

Purple Loosestrife is a striking reddish-purple wetland flower on tall, square stems that can look beautiful along ditches and shorelines, but it's a prohibited noxious w**d in Alberta that quickly takes over marshes, waterways, and irrigation canals.

A single mature plant can produce more than a million seeds a year, along with new shoots from its expanding rootstock, allowing it to crowd out native wetland plants and displace the waterfowl and wildlife that depend on them. Because established infestations are extremely difficult to remove, prevention and prompt hand-pulling of isolated young plants — bagged and burned to avoid spreading seed — is the most effective way to keep it in check.

Learn how to recognize and manage Purple Loosestrife at mdlsr.ca/weekly-w**d.
