Housing The Workforce: An Employer Exchange

Businesses owners: housing availability is affecting your ability to hire, retain, and grow, and this session is where that employer experience gets put on the record.

Join Municipal staff and the Urban Systems consulting team, alongside Darrell Morgan of Morgan Fuels & Bigwood Property Management, for a focused conversation on how housing is impacting workforce recruitment, retention, and business growth in Sioux Lookout.

You've seen the impact firsthand. Positions that stayed open, offers that fell through, staff who couldn't find a place to live. Come ready to talk specifics:

-How many positions have gone unfilled, or offers declined, because of housing?
- What does your workforce actually need, long-term rentals, family-sized units, seasonal or short-term stays?
- What household sizes and employee types (seasonal, rotational, newly recruited) are you trying to house?
-How much housing would your sector need to support the growth you're planning for?

Help us quantify the employment impacts of housing availability. including the number of positions that have gone unfilled, offers declined, or workers lost because suitable housing was not available.

Your input will help Urban Systems identify the scale and type of rental demand across different employment sectors and inform a sector-based Housing Needs Assessment. with strategies and a clear picture built around what you and your workforce actually need.

Authentic Northern Hospitality in Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout continues to build a strong foundation for visitors, business travellers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. As the "Hub of the North," the Municipality supports a diverse and growing accommodation sector, shaped by the land, the lakes, and the northern way of life that defines this community.

Visitors to the community can choose from:

-Full-service hotels, motels and inns, offering modern amenities and comfort for corporate travel, conferences, and events
-Lakeside lodges and resorts, set along Pelican Lake, Lac Seul, and the region's many waterways
-Fly-in and boat-in outposts, offering total seclusion deep in the boreal wilderness for fishing, hunting, and remote adventure
-Cabins and campgrounds, ideal for families and travelers looking to connect with the outdoors
-Short-term rentals and private accommodations, for those seeking a home-away-from-home experience

This range of options reflects Sioux Lookout's role as a regional service center and true gateway to Northwestern Ontario's lake country, where remote access, natural landscape, and northern hospitality come together to support both leisure tourism and the steady flow of business, healthcare, and regional travel that moves through our community.

⚠️Hydrant Flushing Begins Monday! ⚠️

Please note that hydrant flushing will be taking place starting Monday, September 14th, until work is completed. The work will be from 8am to 4:30pm daily and will continue the week of September 21st, until completed.

During the flushing process, you may experience low water pressure or discoloured water. If you experience discoloured water, avoid running hot water to reduce the chance of sediments entering your tank. Run your cold tap until the water runs clear again, normally only a minute or two.

If you have questions or concerns, please call Public Works at 807-737-1234.

Housing Shapes Whether People Can Work Here.

We know housing continues to be a real challenge for our community, and for the employers trying to attract and retain staff. This assessment moves us from acknowledging that challenge to acting on it with real data, breaking down housing needs by sector (healthcare, aviation, and others) and by housing type, from entry-level rentals to family and executive housing, so we know exactly what's missing and for whom.

The land and cost analysis on municipal sites, including Hudson, ensures any future development is grounded in real feasibility, not guesswork. And because labour shortage remains our community's top business challenge, this work directly supports workforce attraction by tackling the housing barrier standing in the way of recruitment.

Local employers: your input matters. If you're navigating housing challenges when recruiting or retaining staff, we want to hear from you. The survey takes about 15 minutes and can be completed anonymously.
