Assumptions about absenteeism, performance, and accommodation costs often do not reflect the realities of employing people with disabilities.

The facts show that employees with disabilities perform at comparable levels to their peers, and with WorkBC’s support, accommodation costs for employers are often minimal or non-existent.

Creating inclusive workplaces is not only achievable, but it also supports productivity, accessibility, and stronger teams!

SUCCESS STORY 🎉

After facing two years of unemployment while navigating life in a remote, rural community, Tanya arrived at WorkBC Centre Sicamous alongside significant barriers. A survivor of violence and abuse, a person with disabilities, and recently exiting homelessness, she was working to stabilize her housing, health, and income while managing ADHD, autoimmune conditions, and recovery from substance use. Despite these challenges, Tanya was determined to rebuild her confidence and find meaningful employment that could accommodate her needs and support long-term stability.

With the guidance of the WorkBC Sicamous team, Tanya completed a comprehensive Client Needs Assessment and a Disability-Related Employment Needs Assessment, helping to identify her strengths, goals, and the supports required for success. She received personalized case management, resume and cover letter support, and a referral to personal counselling to build employment readiness. By attending the WorkBC Sicamous Job Fair and actively applying for opportunities, Tanya regained confidence in herself and her abilities, leading to interviews and a job offer.

Today, Tanya is working and thriving in a role that accommodates her disabilities, supported by Assistive Technology Services and essential work clothing to ensure a successful transition and job retention. Reflecting on her journey, she shared heartfelt appreciation for the “super friendly and welcoming” WorkBC team, whose guidance, resources, and encouragement helped her take this next step forward.

“Success looks like maintaining employment, my sobriety and growing personally and professionally.”

SUCCESS STORY 🎉

When Russell first connected with WorkBC Centre Sicamous, he was determined to change the direction of his life. After more than two years of unemployment, he faced multiple barriers as an Indigenous single parent living in a rural community and navigating the impacts of a disability. He knew he needed updated skills, renewed confidence, and targeted job search support to find sustainable work, and WorkBC became the partner he needed on that journey.

With guidance from his Employment Consultant, Russell engaged in case management, attended self‑marketing and interview skills workshops, and worked closely with staff to create a strong, targeted résumé and cover letter. Even while managing personal challenges, vehicle issues, and experiences of perceived discrimination, he demonstrated remarkable resilience. His Employment Consultant actively marketed him to employers, explored wage subsidy opportunities, and helped him identify full‑time positions that aligned with his new Class 3 driver’s license and long‑term career goals.

Through Job Start supports, including work clothing and fuel assistance, Russell transitioned smoothly into a permanent, full‑time equipment operator role. Today, he is working steadily, earning a solid wage, and enjoying the stability he has worked so hard to achieve. His journey is a reminder that with determination, training, and the right support, meaningful employment is absolutely possible.

“I have less financial stress; I’m keeping my bills paid and I’m finally supporting myself.”
