For volunteer firefighters, every second counts — and communication is critical. One tool that has become extremely valuable for our department is IAmResponding.

When members are paged to an emergency through our Minitor pagers, firefighters can immediately respond in the app to indicate whether they are able to attend the call. This gives officers and responding members a quick snapshot of available manpower before crews even arrive at the hall.

The app also helps determine which station members are responding to, which is especially important when operating with a substation. Members can mark if they will be delayed, unavailable, or out of the area for a set amount of time, helping improve accountability and response planning.

Since firefighters often arrive at the hall at different times within minutes of a page, the app allows us to see who is still responding and who is already on scene. An optional GPS feature can even provide a visual track of responding members, giving crews a better understanding of how far out personnel are during active calls.

The application also allows members to receive a text and recording of the incident paged. So even if the member didn't have their pager with them, they could still receive the call, acting as a "second pager".

Another major benefit is the integration with our dispatch centre. Dispatchers can send information directly through the app, including emergency details, mapping coordinates, and updates — all securely shared with responders without publicly disclosing sensitive information over radio traffic.

The mapping features are also a tremendous asset for emergency operations. Departments can upload pre-planning documents for businesses and buildings, along with locations of wet and dry hydrants throughout the response area. Having this information readily accessible helps crews make informed decisions before arriving on scene.

A newer feature has also enhanced responses to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Depending on the vehicle involved, the system can sometimes provide precise vehicle location information and additional crash-related data to assist emergency responders and 9-1-1 callers during critical incidents.

Beyond emergency response, the app is also an excellent communication tool for training nights, meetings, and recreational events. Members receive notifications through text and email, helping ensure everyone stays informed and connected.

Technology continues to improve coordination, accountability, and communication within the volunteer fire service — helping departments respond more efficiently when the community needs us most.

Restricted domestic burning is permitted between the hours of 7:00 P.M and 8:00 A.M in the following counties: All remaining counties in Nova Scotia.
—————————————————————
Please note, there is no domestic burning between 8:00 A.M and 2:00 P.M daily, and restrictions are reassessed and posted everyday at 2:00 P.M; in fire risk season.

The restrictions apply to all open fires, which encompass campfires, fire pits, chimineas, fire bowls, and outdoor wood-burning stoves, along with burn barrels. Additionally, domestic brush burning and industrial burning activities, including those for agricultural purposes and clearing building lots, are subject to these rules. Fire restrictions also apply to provincial, municipal, and private campgrounds, while national parks are governed by Parks Canada. However, the daily fire restrictions do not apply to CSA-approved appliances when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. This includes devices such as barbecues, fire bowls, stoves, and patio heaters that operate on propane, natural gas, or other gases intended for these appliances, with charcoal barbecues permitted only when using briquettes.

To report a wildfire or violations of fire restrictions (including illegal burns), please call 1-800-565-2224, or 9-1-1. The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNR) and/or the local fire department will be notified and dispatched to the location of the fire.

Consumer fireworks are prohibited by the Office of the Fire Marshal when the fire risk map is red. However, professional fireworks companies with permits and appropriate fire equipment and measures are allowed to use fireworks.

Additionally, you must also follow your municipal bylaws.
