Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park

Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park Park Hours:
May 15th - Oct 15th
OPEN DAILY
9:00AM-6:30PM (last admission 5:30pm) The Park has been a popular tourist destination since the 1950s.

The Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park is home to over 60 species of animals, mostly native to Canada with a few exotics. All of our animals cannot be released into the wild as they are either injured, orphaned, born in captivity, or otherwise imprinted on humans and reliant on our care. The wide walkways through the park are easily accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, giving everyone an o

pportunity to see and learn about our amazing wildlife. The Park is situated on 40 hectares (99 acres) of natural woodlands and wetlands housing our animals in large, natural enclosures along a 2km main walking trail. Interpretive signs throughout the park will tell you everything you need to know about our wildlife exhibits. Interpretive features in the Wildlife Station give a more in depth look at native birds, local habitats, and includes a working beehive. There is also a display featuring amazing photographs local photographers have captured of the park animals. Visit the Wetland Centre to discover the wonders of the wetlands. There are interactive displays, activities, and tanks of live wetland creatures like invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Walk the 1km wetland trail to explore a variety of wetlands as well as immersive features like a bird blind, boardwalks, and floating dock. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the 10-hectare picnic grounds, which has sheltered tables and toilets, plus lots of room for children and families to run and play. Kids of all ages will enjoy the large playground. Look for the trail head to a 1.5km one-way hiking trail into the St Andrew’s Marsh for beautiful views of nature. Remember your day by picking up a souvenir at the seasonal gift shop or enjoy some ice cream or snacks from the seasonal canteen. A variety of educational programs and tours are available by booking, check out our website for more information. Check out our events to see if anything special is happening soon!

We are saddened to share the passing of Kitchi, a beloved North American river otter who brought joy to so many.

Kitchi arrived at Salmonier Nature Park in 2020 as an orphan requiring care. Unable to return to the wild, she moved to Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park in July 2021, where she became an ambassador for her species.

Over the years, Kitchi captured the hearts of staff and visitors with her big personality and playful spirit. She helped connect people to wetlands and wildlife, inspiring care and conservation for the natural world.

Yesterday morning, Kitchi showed signs of illness and was transported to a veterinary clinic for assessment. During the examination, she suffered cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of the veterinary team, she could not be revived.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to help determine the cause of her sudden passing.

Kitchi will be deeply missed, and her impact will not be forgotten. 💙

We are excited to officially share...

A new interpretive trail experience which is located along the Wetland Trail behind the Wetland Centre!

🍃Whispers from the Wetlands!🍃

This collaborative project led by Kateri Dorey (Outreach Coordinator for Indigenous
Engagement with Ducks Unlimited Canada) brings together community voices, Mi’kmaq language, cultural teachings, artwork, and Wetland education through the guiding principle of Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing), which values both Indigenous knowledge and Western science.

Along this Wetland trail, visitors will discover 15 interpretive signs featuring wetland species found throughout Mi’kma’ki. Each sign shares ecological information alongside traditional teachings, cultural connections, and the important role these species play within wetland ecosystems.

Visitors can also scan the QR codes found on each sign to hear the Mi’kmaq names of these species spoken by youth from Sipekne’katik, helping carry the language forward for future generations.

The beautiful artwork featured throughout the project was created by Melissa White from Sipekne’katik, and artwork inspired by this project is also available for purchase in the gift shop.

We invite everyone to visit the trail throughout the summer to explore the wetlands, connect with nature, and experience the stories these species have to share.

The wetlands are always speaking, sometimes we just need to slow down enough to hear their whispers.❤🦆

⚠️ Weather Closure – Tuesday, March 17 ⚠️

Due to tomorrow’s stormy conditions, the park will be closed for the day.
We’re expecting significant rainfall amounts, high sustained winds, and thunder throughout our operating hours.

These conditions increase the risk of falling branches and potential power or internet outages, so closing is the safest option for everyone.

Check back Wednesday! Stay safe and take care! 💚
